Together with Tarryn Cherniayeff, hair director and co-founder of Sydney’s MOB Hair, we’ve narrowed down the list to bring you the two hair hues that are going to be everywhere this spring season. Start pinning these hair colour ideas and get booking that appointment, beauties!

SPRING HAIR TREND #1: Babylights

Cutesy name aside, what actually are babylights? According to Tarryn, they’re the next big thing in highlighting for your hair. “Babylights are subtle, delicate highlights created using a very fine hair colour technique,” she says.  “This recreates the subtle, multi-dimensional hair colour seen on childrens’ hair. In other words, the most natural-looking highlights there is.” So if you’re wanting to try something new but you’re not ready to commit to a major hair change, babylights might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Celebrities have been sporting the look left, right and centre for months. “Gigi Hadid and Selena Gomez have really made the babylight hair trend their own,” says Tarryn. And although Gigi’s warm blonde tones and Selena’s rich caramel hue are miles apart, babylights still work across both shades.

Convinced? Good news – Tarryn says that babylights can work for almost any hair type, hairstyle or colour. “Whether you have short hair, long hair or are going through an ‘awkward-length phase’ – babylights don’t discriminate!” she says. “With that being said, babylights are best suited to blonde to light brown hair. The darker you get, the harder they are to see as part of their magic is that they are subtle.”  So unfortunately for all you raven-haired beauties, babylights may not be for you.

And for all you lazy girls out there, you’ll be thrilled to know that babylights are actually very low maintenance thanks to their subtlety. You’ll only need to rebook that appointment for every 8–10 weeks, which makes babylights a viable option if you’re time-poor.

But full disclosure – you will have to commit to a lengthy salon visit for your first appointment so that your hairstylist can get the colour exactly right. “It’s a delicate process that uses a very fine hair colour technique,” explains Tarryn. If little extra time in the chair means a whole lot less time in the chair later on, we reckon the trade-off is worth it.

Keeping your babylights fresh is easy! Just rely on hard-working hair products.

SPRING HAIR TREND #2: Grown-Up Pastels

No, we’re not flashing back to the pastel brights that of 2015. This new iteration of the pastel hair trend is decidedly cooler.  “2017’s pastels are subtler, chalk-ier and more nuanced this time around,” says Tarryn. Remember the blorange hair colour trend that dominated your social media feeds earlier in the year? Or the dreamy rose gold tones that everyone was lusting after a few months ago? That’s the laidback vibe this trend taps into. “Think more Kendall, less Kylie,” adds Tarryn.

But Kardashian-Jenners aside, there’s plenty of grown-up pastel hair inspiration kicking about. Sienna Miller, Dannii Minogue and Hailey Baldwin are just a few of the A-list celebs that are turning their locks pastel. Tarryn cites Hilary Duff’s recent turquoise turn as a major colour-crush. “Hilary’s mermaid looking hair looked whimsical, and unlike most colour trends it got better as it faded,” she says.

The first thing many think of when considering the big colour change is the major overhaul their hair would need to showcase the pastel look. But according to Tarryn, it’s much less complicated than you’d think. In fact, the darker your hair is, the better your transformation could be! “If you were born with black hair and opt for a pastel colour, chances are you will have the most jaw-dropping effect as it will be the biggest difference from your natural hair colour.”

In order to make sure you’re firmly planted in the ‘good transformation’ category, you’ll need to consult your hair colourist first. “It’s a good idea to ask your hairstylist which pastel colour you should go for. I think it looks amazing when someone matches their eye colour and skin tone to their pastel shade,” explains Tarryn. Just like any hair colour, some shades will look better on you than others. Tarryn recommends opting for a shade that works with your unique skin tone. “Ashy tones like purple or silver work best with those who have a olive base to their skin,” she says. “Warmer tones such as champagne and rose gold suit people with fairer, creamy-based skin tones.”

So what about the maintenance factor? Well, there’s no mincing words here – to maintain the pastel colour, you’ll need a fair bit of upkeep. However, faded pastels are having a major moment so you might even prefer the faded tone. “Have a play around with the colour and work out what pastel tone you like best,” Tarryn says.
