Beauty trend: The hair bow

Once probably a staple in your tween beauty repertoire, it’s likely those schoolgirl ribbons have long since been forgotten, and now reside at the bottom of your beauty cupboard, or are kept for the final touches to gift wrapping. But much like the humble headband, diamante clip and floral barrette, the simple knotted ribbon is seeing a resurgence in the beauty world from the runways to the streets of your city.

So set your reservations aside and don’t let memories of school scare you away from giving this feminine flair a try. With just a few chic tweaks, you’ll be able to pull off the hair bow like a woman. Welcome to the best hair trend of 2016…

EMBRACE IT

The oversized black neoprene bows spotted at Roksanda Ilincic’s runway prove simplicity is key. Not for the faint-hearted, these bold, sharp bows are powerfully offset by the loosely textured lived-in ponytail. Cute, but certainly not too girly, the neoprene bow creates a solid structure. This contemporary take feels feminine but also tough, and is intended to be deemed as anything but meek and mild.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Oscar de la Renta (left) and Nina Ricci (right) took an understated approach to the loop. Ponytails were glossy, low and loose and finished with a plain, silky bow. A cinch to recreate, and subtle enough for the office yet suitably sophisticated for a night out, this style elevates the innocent hair bow to new heights of refinement. Romantic without being overly prim, this approach to the bow is certainly one to add to the beauty bravado.

GO FRENCH, SO CHIC

Equal parts quintessentially Parisian, cool and easy, Lanvin is officially bringing hair bows back. The spiky, messy chignons were instantly softened with well-placed, highly French satin bows in dusty pinks and soft violet. Rest assured, this is one seriously fashionable take on the bow.

BH TIP: PLAY WITH PAIRINGS

Bows might be synonymous with ponytails, but just remember the pair aren’t exclusive. Bows work on braids, plaits, chignons and other updos as well. And if you want to get really tricky, try weaving a ribbon through your style and finish it off with a bow. If you’re a fan of quick fixes, pin a pre-tied bow to your strands for embellishment.

BH TIP: LOOSEN IT UP

Unless your goal is to look like a cheerleader, avoid high and tight ponytails adorned with a bow. Top ponys are certainly stylish, but they are also a bold look in their own right. If you want to keep your look fresh, feminine and womanly, keep your ‘do loose and low. Add to this by loosening hairs near the nape of your neck and temples to add movement.
