How to choose the right milkmaid braid for you

Fact: finding ways to shake up your look can be difficult. And if you’re not prepared to change your hair colour, boldly cut a fringe or hair length, you’re a little limited when it comes to finding new ways to wear your ‘do.

The great news is a statement style doesn’t have to be hard to create; in fact it can be easy – if you know a) what you’re doing and b) which style suits you best.

The thing I love most about a milkmaid braid is that there are so many different ways you can wear them. Check our favourite celebrity adaptations and decide which one is best for you…

The elegant milkmaid a la Hayden Panetierre

For a more sophisticated look, this slicked-back style is perfect. Instead of letting pieces of hair hang down by your face, Hayden has chosen to brush her hair back and let the braid frame her face. We like this look for an elegant event or red carpet ‘do as it allows you to have your neck and shoulders bare and even rock statement jewellery, just like Hayden – if you wish. The key to this look is taming any flyways or misbehaving strands. You can do this using a comb and a good quality hairspray once your hair is scooped back into a ponytail – but before you begin braiding.

The Saturday night milkmaid a la Maia Mitchell

The Aussie starlet puts a youthful spin on the classic milkmaid braid with a middle part, soft fringe pieces and a textbook braid across her crown. This look is perfect if you’re looking to attempt a braid that will get attention without being too over the top. A style like this also caters for outfits that feature a high-neck and are best achieved with hair that’s ‘gritty’ instead of freshly washed. So it’s a good idea to spritz a texturising spray through your ends before attempting to create this style.

The fishtail milkmaid a la Jennifer Morrison

If you’re looking to get a little more intricate with your look, a fishtail/milkmaid braid is like the ultimate partnership. Two awesome braids come together to create one completely mind-blowing look – and it’s not even difficult. Seriously. If you’re a little unsure of how to create a fishtail braid (shame on you! You obviously haven’t watched my tutorial!) then you can use a fishtail braid extension instead of trying to do it with your own hair, which will eliminate all of the hard work!

The prim and proper milkmaid a la Bella Thorne

If you’re looking to take part in the milkmaid braid trend but don’t really want to go the whole hog, then you’ll be pleased to know that you don’t have to. A simple braid that runs across the crown of your head puts you in the same league as some of the more show-stopping milkmaid braids – with little or no effort involved. The best part is you can still rock your signature waves or poker straight strands and mix it up with a subtle, yet sexy addition to your ‘do.

The ultra boho milkmaid a la

This kind of unstructured, boho milkmaid braid is not for the faint-hearted. The great thing is that perfection isn’t all that welcome with this ‘do. Imperfection is key for this look, so it’s a great choice for people with curly or wavy hair that want to make an effort without time-consuming blow-drying and straightening. Better yet, the chaotic nature of this ‘do means that if you need to use an extension to ensure your hair is long enough, it can be easily hidden in your hair.
