Well, apparently.

According to John Paul DeJoria, the founder of Paul Mitchell hair care, we should no longer be looking to lipstick sales as an economic indicator, but how often people are making a trek to the hair salon.

You see, when we’re experiencing an economic downturn, DeJoria says we tend to push back our trim, treatment or colour appointments from six-week intervals to eight.

But, as soon as employment figures start to rise and we’re rolling in a little more coin, we’re knocking on our preferred stylists door every six weeks without fail. Interesting, huh?

I don’t know about you, but this theory has left me pondering, beauties. What do I give up when my bank balance is low? And what do I indulge in when I’ve got a few extra $100 notes floating about?

It appears John Paul DeJoria knows me a little too well, as professional haircuts and dye jobs are the first things to go when I’m strapped for cash. Oh, and I welcome facials and stunning make-up pieces into my life when I’m feeling a wee bit rich.

But what about the rest of the bh clan, huh?

bh’s Deb tends to avoid her hairstylist when funds are low too, and finds a relaxing massage-filled spa day the ultimate indulgence when her wallet is feeling plump.

bh’s Liv switches to cheaper products and DIY manis and pedis when the budget’s a tad tight, but makes sure her balayage is looking mighty fresh whenever payday rolls around.

And even if her ends are ratty and literally breaking off, bh’s Carli will also delay a professional haircut for the sake of saving some coin, but head to a luxe beauty counter to nab herself a brilliant – but expensive – mascara when her bank account is looking rather healthy.

Having said that, it seems monitoring us ladies and our trips to the beauty salon really is a good indication of how the economy is fairing. Good one, John.

Tell me, what beauty product or treatment do you give up when money is tight? And what do you spend big on when you’re able to?
