Expert tips on how to grow out a pixie cut

The thought of a pixie cut strikes fear into the heart of most women. While the look can be as striking and bold as it can soft and feminine, there’s always that element of “what if I don’t like it?” And then there’s the follow-up fear of, “but what happens when I’m done with it and I want my long hair back?”

Yes, growing out a short hair-do can be awkward, frustrating, and downright infuriating. Which is why we turned to Fudge’s Freelance Session Stylist, Michele McQuillan, for some advice. Michele knows all too well that the biggest challenge of growing out a pixie cut is right before the hair sits flatter and you get that bouffant-esque look.

First and foremost, Michele suggests cutting it right – “Trim the sides and back until the lengths level out”.

Then, it’s all about how you style your hair. And it’s not necessarily a one-style-suits-all kinda deal. Your hair type can make a huge difference, so be sure to use products and style your hair accordingly. Michele suggests the following:

For straight hair:
Cuts that are one length tend to look best on naturally straight hair. Try a graduated bob (like Victoria Beckham rocked a few years ago) as you grow out the pixie cut.

For fine or limp hair:
Use a little product to help create some volume while your hair is shorter and try adding some layers as the length grows. Be careful not to use products that are too heavy (such as oils, creams or waxes) as this can weigh down your hair.

For wavy hair:
Long layers work best for naturally wavy hair, but if you’re after a fuller style, keep the layers shorter. Use hair oil and let your hair dry naturally if you can.

For curly hair:
You don’t need much when it comes to styling curly hair – just some oil and conditioners in your hair with no handling of it as this will make it go frizzy. The key with curls is to let the curl find it’s way naturally.

Styles you can try while growing out your pixie cut:

Choppy and asymmetrical bob a la Rihanna and Michelle Williams

The ‘Louise Brookes’ bob a la Katie Holmes and Christina Ricci

Textured and wavy a la Carey Mulligan and Charlize Theron

Oh, and as far as product goes for messing up a shorter ‘do that’s growing out, Michele generally recommends using clay as wax can be too oily. Put a small amount in the palm of your hands and rub them together to spread the product. Then add it to your hair to create your style.
Try:
Fudge Clay Matte Mineral Classic Clay Wax
Sexy Hair Short Sexy Hair Rocked out Pliable Molding Clay
VO5 Extreme Style
La Biosthetique Matt Clay
