So did you stay up and switch on the Emmys last night? For the first time in awards show history, I even stayed awake until the credits rolled, a supreme feat since I was more glazed than a Krispy Kreme Original (is it wrong that I actually know the official names of doughnuts?) half way through the red carpet. Don’t get me wrong, there were some stunners stalking the welcome mat, but I just thought it all a bit predictable. And safe. Was anyone surprised that Heidi Klum worked a strapless scarlet gown and almost-messy updo like a supermodel (with extra kudos for self-made earrings)? Or that Eva Longoria dripped glamour in a blinging cocktail frock, sexy loose curls and frosted pink lips? I was even bored by Debra Messing looking so flawless in white Ralph Lauren. Again. Yawn.
Mariska Hargitay’s sexy bob teamed with an architectural Zac Posen dress was a bright spot and I’m still deciding whether Ellen Pompeo’s half-hive and winged eyeliner was brave or bonkers, but the look that really stopped me snoozing was Jennifer Morrison’s.
It’s not that taking a modern twist on Old Hollywood is a red carpet revolution or anything, but Jen gets props because it’s not her signature/rut style. And she nailed it. That silver fringed Ellie Saab was a super sexy sidestep for Jen, and she matched its gleam with masterful hair and make-up. I love that she has branched out to blonde and adore that her side-parted and low-slung cluster of curls suggested 40s siren, but stopped short of theme-party finger waves. Cleverly, her pretty pink lips didn’t try to outshine the frock and those subtly shimmering lids lined with grey sealed it – the girl did good. And something glamorously different for her. I mean, it’s not like she’s Kathryn Heigel, is it?
