Backstage beauty trick: use extensions like an expert

Want a fuller, more glamorous mane but think extensions look obvious? Here’s how catwalk hairstylists master the illusion…

Extensions have proven an essential accessory at RAFW. Temporary tresses have turned up the volume at no less than Zimmermann, Marnie Skillings, Shakuhachi, Jessie Hill, Flamingo Sands, Hotel Bondi Swim and, well, pretty much any show where the mane event was something special.

To make them look believable, hairdressers have been curling, straightening, twisting and scrunching extensions before inserting them. As clip-ins are likely to have a different texture and resilience, inserting and styling them with your natural locks won’t guarantee an even effect. Styling extensions separately means you can match them to your real hair perfectly.

Hairdresser Jayne Wild also suggests teasing the insertion area a little. This gives the extensions better grip and helps stop them slipping.
