We sought the sage advice of Grant Withnell, National Technical Educator for Schwarzkopf, for some tips on exactly what you should be looking for in an at-home hair colour to ensure you achieve the best possible results…
Tip #1: Do your research. When beginning the search for a new hair colour, Grant recommends doing your research and ensuring what you’re choosing is relevant to you and your current hair colour. “When selecting colours for your hair, refer to the colour guide on the pack, this will give you an indication of the suitability of that shade for your natural hair colour,” says Grant.
Tip #2: Stay natural. Grant’s tip to finding the perfect hair colour is to always stay within two shades of your natural hair colour as it means you’ll always achieve a flattering result that doesn’t look unnatural.
Tip #3: Determine your real hair colour. “A mistake a lot of women make is to compare the colour on the box to the colour of the ends of their hair,” says Grant. “But because the ends of your hair often has remnants of your previous colour, or is naturally lighter than your roots, it’s not actually a true reflection of your natural hair colour.” To ensure that you achieve the best colour results possible, always compare the colour guide on the DIY hair dye box to the shade of your roots.
Tip #4: Choose the lighter of two shades. Can’t decide between two shades? No problem! Grant’s advice to is to always go for the lighter shade, as sometimes the dark pigment takes over and the colour comes out darker than you anticipated.
