Telethons and fun runs are pretty standard options. And nanas like a good old lamington drive. But the French, when they want to raise cash, they make perfume. And not just any old perfume; they recreate the signature scent of their most (in)famous queen, Marie Antoinette.

Composed by famed fragrance-maker Francis Kurkdjian from the rediscovered notes of Marie Antoinette’s personal perfumer, Sillage de la Reine (In the Queen’s Wake) is said to reflect the young royal’s wish to always leave behind an uncommon, inimitable trail. Intense blooms of rose, iris, cut jasmine and orange blossom are modulated by woody touches of cedar and sandalwood, the entire composition then underscored by Tonkin musk and grey amber. The purely natural scent is then bottled in coveted crystal flasks inscribed with M.A.

Fancy a fragrance custom fit to a queen? You best have luck and king’s ransom on your side. Only 10 prestige versions were bottled in Baccarat crystal, each with an 8000 euro ($13,000) price tag attached, and each of a further 1000 limited edition versions sold for 350 euros (over $500) each. All those euros then went to Chateau de Versailles for the purchase of a travel case that belonged to Marie Antoinette. I’m disappointed to have missed a sniff, even if the less prestigious version is far too rich for my peasant’s purse.

Still, I love the idea of a fragrant fundraiser. Oh, how fabulously French. Let your nana eat cake; we’ll wear perfume…
