When some fragrances are born, they become instantly popular. But it’s the ones that continue to shine year after year that become the classics. Or the cults, as some say. Their divine blend of notes remain modern yet ever lasting, and the bank of memories they evoke continues on and on.
Despite their flawless note combination, perfumers often can’t resist tweaking their originals. And this curiosity is wonderful for us. It allows us to play with a new blend of ingredients, without straying too much. It’s a like giving your scent wardrobe a mini-revamp, really.
That’s where these five perfumes come in. Each one was born of the success of an original classic, and their genetics ensure their note makeup is nothing but outstanding. But which new juice will land your senses in a flutter? And are you willing to put aside a cult scent for its offspring? Let’s find out…
THE ORIGINAL SCENT: Issey Miyake L’eau D’Issey EDP
THE NEW TWIST: Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Absolue EDP
Unlike the crisp, fresh, water-like original, Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Absolue Eau de Parfum contains the intense notes of night-blooming jasmine. Add to that a mix of tuberose and provence honey absolute and you’ve got a wonderful richness and intensity. However, top notes lotus flower and freesia accord treat your nose to a delicacy all Issey Miyake lovers are used to.
THE ORIGINAL SCENT: Gucci Guilty
THE NEW TWIST: Gucci Guilty Black pour Femme EDT
Gucci is known for its love of the base note patchouli, and this new darker twist on the original juice doesn’t stray from this signature note. Like Guilty, it also contains pink pepper, but mixes a delicious palette of fruits (read: raspberry and peach) with lilac and violet to create a truly feminine oriental floral scent.
THE ORIGINAL SCENT: Bottega Veneta
THE NEW TWIST: Bottega Veneta Eau Légère
Adopting the signature leathery floral chypre notes of the original, the soon-to-be-released Veneta Eau Légère is a little more gentle, a little more fresh, and a little more feminine. Don’t let this fool you, though – the combination of musk and oak moss allow this juice to leave a lasting impression.
THE ORIGINAL SCENT: L’OCCITANE Cherry Blossom EDT
THE NEW TWIST: L’OCCITANE Spring Cherry EDT
Utilising the fresh notes of mandarine and orange, Spring Cherry is a little less flowery than the original, which contains the divine lily of the valley. And although the signature note of cherry blossom still reigns supreme, the magnolia, freesia and base notes of musk and iris still stand their floral ground.
THE ORIGINAL SCENT: Juicy Couture Eau De Couture
THE NEW TWIST: Juicy Couture Couture La La
Feminine. Daring. Sparkling. This juice by, well, Juicy Couture embodies all of these superb qualities. Blending delicious mandarin with bold white florals ensures it makes for a delicious fruity floral fragrant experience; one that is somewhat different to the fresher original.
Have you worn any of the original versions of these fragrances? Are you keen to try out the new versions of the cult-like scents? What is your favourite ‘classic’ perfume?
The L’OCCITANE Spring Cherry EDT would be my favourite. I love this brand for fragrances, long lasting and sweetly scented.
I really want to try it!
Don’t buy toilette waters. Especially nothing from juicy couture.
Do you buy parfum or EDP?
