Admit defeat

Admit defeat

It’s hard to swallow but there are some make-up looks that just aren’t for you. I’m swallowing my pride to reveal mine and trying to let go with some dignity still intact.

The lesson I’m learning – the hard way – is that when I apply a shock of pink to the apples of my cheeks, the result is more ‘flush’ than ‘blush’.

It all started many, many months ago now – when my little eyes spied a rather lovely make-up look happening over in Gwen Stefani land. I’m not sure if you remember the one, but you will remember what it was promoting – the divine Harajuku Lovers Fragrances whose quirky cuteness we all fell for. The model’s deer-in-the-headlights look was perfectly complemented with the most flawless of flawless bases coupled with a burst of doll-esque pink blush.

I wanted it. I had to have it. And I have never been so utterly disappointed with the results. Clearly – I’m still discussing it a year later.

Laying blame anywhere but at my door was my first port of call. I switched blush like there was no tomorrow. Over time I tried, amongst others, MAC Cream Colour Base in Pink Shock, NARS Blush in Desire, BECCA Soft Touch Blush in Sylph, Clinique Blushing Blush Powder Blush in Pink Love, Maybelline New York Mineral Power Blush in Gentle Pink, Bourjois Nouveaux Blush in Cendre De Rose Brune …you get the idea, I’ve been around the blushing track.

Lamenting my fate over dinner with the girls led to the rather brutal and honest advice that you can only expect from your best girlfriends to “suck it up”. It seems we’ve all got our make-up hang-ups but what’s important is not letting them dominate you. Because for every blush you can’t wear, there will be a luscious lippy or crazy kohl that you ROCK. And you can guarantee your friends will tell you when you do.

What’s your rocking-it piece of make-up? Do you nail a winged eye? Or can you carry off a high-shine gloss so well that all your friends are crazy-jealous?
