Forget happy pills, the thing that really puts a smile on people’s face during times of uncertainty, like, gee, a recession, is a fresh, upbeat fragrance.

Yep, forget the cool, brooding, earthy notes of Jo Malone Black Vetyver Café Cologne, APIVITA Earth Scent and Instinct by David Beckham. What we need is a petal pick-me-up.

Terry Molnar, from the Fragrance Foundation USA, revealed recently, in British Grazia, that “floral perfumes do well in a recession because they’re dreamy and romantic. They’re referred to as hope scents.” Interestingly Dr Craig Warren of the Sense of Smell Institute at the University of California conducted a mood-mapping study of 70 women and found that flowers had “a predominantly happy effect on people, especially lily of the valley” so stock up on Taylor of London White Lily of the Valley Eau de Toilette and Crabtree & Evelyn Lily of the Valley EDP!
