Earth Month 2009

Earth Month 2009

It’s heartbreaking to sit here typing, three glasses around me, knowing that over *one billion people worldwide don’t have access to clean water.  It seems like such a basic human right. Scrap that, it IS a basic human right.

That’s why us bh beauties wholeheartedly support Aveda’s 2009 Earth Month, which begins today. For those of you that haven’t followed the hugely successful Earth Month campaigns that the activist-based brand pioneered, here’s a little recap: Aveda care about the planet and those who inhabit it. Since 1999, the global brand has strived to go one step further than just celebrating Earth Day (which they’ve done since the brand’s inception 30 years ago) so, each April, it unites network professionals and people like you and me to raise money for environmental causes.

Following on from its hugely successful 2008 effort (in which the brand raised $2.8 million for clean water rights worldwide), the goal is getting bigger and bigger each year: this year the fundraising goal stands at $3 million to support and preserve clean water.

It sounds so simple, and it really, really is. What you can do to help:

Purchase the limited edition Aveda “Light the Way” Candle. The gorgeous candle features EcoCert certified organic lavender, lavandin and clary sage blended together in a subtle, stress-relieving aroma. It’s under $20 and 100 per cent of the profits will be donated to Global Greengrants Fund, Aveda’s global Earth Month partner.

Participate in The Aveda Walk for Water campaign. Did you know that the average distance women in developing countries walk to collect water every day is **six kilometres? Or that the average weight of water that they carry is approximately 20 kilograms? This new global initiative from Aveda acknowledges the daily struggle that these women and communities face. It aims to raise awareness and much-needed funds for local organisations working to preserve clean water. The event will take place across Australia on Sunday, April 19 so grab your girlfriends, the kids, your neighbours, the dog and walk together in spirit of this excellent cause.

Don’t you think water is a basic human right?
