Celeb perfumes: do their new scents measure up?

You’ve got to hand it to some celebrity scent makers – no matter how busy they are with their acting and singing careers, they still manage to regularly release new fragrances. In fact, some celebrities are doing a pretty good job in launching a new perfume every year – crazy!

So how do their new 2012 scents measure up to their predecessors?
We take a look at (just a few of) the celebrity scents that hit shelves this year and see how they differ from last year’s releases.

Taylor Swift

2011: Wonderstruck
The popstar’s debut fragrance was inspired by her own life experiences and aims to invoke her whimsical flair.
The notes – Wonderstruck opens with freesia, apple blossom and raspberry spark, and develops with notes of vanilla, honeysuckle and hibiscus. The scent dries down with notes of golden amber, sandalwood and peach.
The packaging -The purple bottle features a cool rainbow sheen to give it a bit of a magical feel. The gold lid features three charms – the Moravian star, a dove and a birdcage.
2012: Wonderstruck Enchanted
Taylor’s second scent was yet again inspired by the singer herself, but sought to add a new dimension of woodiness to her existing Wonderstruck fragrance.
The notes -The perfume is made up of top notes of wild berries, passion fruit and pink poppy, middles notes of peony combined with sugar-glazed champaca petals and white freesia, and base notes of white musk, vanilla and blond woods.
The packaging – Wonderstruck Enchanted is housed in a similar-shaped bottle to Wonderstruck, but in red. Again, the lid features gold charms selected by Taylor.Kylie Minogue

2011: Dazzling Darling
The light, captivating and feminine scent was built around delicate orris (a species of iris) as an ode to Kylie’s luminous beauty.
The notes – The perfume opens with acai berry accord, gardenia, violet and pink pepper, moves on to notes of rose, passion flower and orris accord, and dries down with notes of chasmeran, musks and sandalwood.
The packaging – Simple and clean, the clear glass bottle is beautifully complemented by the silver cap and subtle purple liquid.
2012: Music Box
Inspired by Kylie’s contribution to music and created to commemorate her 25 years of musical achievements, the floral and fruit scent aims to capture the happiness and wonder surrounding the singer.
The notes – Music Box features top notes of mara des bois, raspberry and bergamot, middles notes of orange blossom, rose and freesia, and dry down notes of sandalwood, amber and white musk.
The packaging – The Music Box couldn’t look more different from Dazzling Darling. The fragrance is housed in a rectangular-shaped bottle with an elaborate gold cap (so that it looks like a vintage music box – clever!).Justin Bieber, 02 9409 7700

2011: Someday
The teen heartthrob dipped his toes into the perfume world with his debut scent, Someday – a fresh, flirty and playful fragrance.
The notes – Someday opens with notes juicy mandarin, pear and wild berries, continues on to fresh notes of jasmine and creamy florals, and dries down with notes of vanilla and soft musk.
The packaging – A simple glass bottle paired with a baby pink, hot pink and red-layered heart cap is perfect for Justin’s target market – women. To top it off, the bottle features a crystal heart charm (from Justin himself).
2012: Girlfriend
Justin’s second foray into scents sought to be a bit more mature and fresh (yet still flirty), just like the singer himself.
The notes – The scent features top notes of crisp mandarin, pear, strawberry and blackberry, heart notes of pink freesia, jasmine, apricot nectar and orange blossom, and dry down notes of vanilla orchid, white amber and musk.
The packaging – Girlfriend’s packaging is a little edgier, a little more arty than Someday, but still features the pinks and purples to draw in the female target market.Beyonce

2011: Pulse
Beyonce’s Pulse is a powerful, sensual, feminine, and irresistible scent that aims to encourage you to exude your own sensuality and strength.
The notes – Pulse opens with top notes of pear blossom, blue curaco accord and frosted bergamot, continues with heart notes of bluebird orchid, peony and midnight blooming jasmine, and dries down with notes of Madagascan vanilla, musk and precious woods.
The packaging – The ultra-modern chrome and blue bottle looks almost a little futuristic. The purpose of the chrome casing? To carefully guard the energy source (aka, the perfume).
2012: Midnight Heat
The fruity, floral scent brings out and highlights your inner radiance, confidence and sex appeal; the perfect evening scent.
The notes – Midnight Heat features top notes of dragonfruit, star fruit and Armenian plum, heart notes of purple mokara orchid, black tulip and peony, and base notes of warm amber, patchouli and sandalwood.
The packaging – This statuesque bottle, which mimics a woman’s curves, is almost identical to Beyonce’s other Heat fragrances (Heat and Heat Rush) except for its purple colouring. David Beckham

2011: Homme
This modern, masculine fragrance (for men, of course) encapsulates the spirit of David Beckham and delivers a blend of woody notes enhanced by fresh spice notes.
The notes – Homme opens with citrus, ginger, pine and a hint of pepper, develops with a heart of cashmere wood, leather and rosemary, and finishes with a base of mahogany wood, patchouli and skin musk.
The packaging – There won’t be any mistaking this fragrance for any other with the giant lettering of the David Beckham brand name. Very simple, very masculine.
2012: The Essence
David Beckham’s newest fragrance for men is a fresh and dynamic scent that aims to capture the…err…essence of a man.
The notes – The Essence opens with top notes of grapefruit, lavender oil and violet leaves, features heart notes of cardamom oil, pineapple and apple, and dries down with notes of cashmeran, patchouli heart and tonka bean.
The packaging – The packaging, though different from Homme, still manages to embody masculinity with the striking embossed woven pattern.
