Turns Out Some Celebrities Don’t Wear Deodorant – Including Julia Roberts

We’ve always been intrigued by the signature scents of our favourite A-list stars.

It’s a known fact in Hollywood that Rihanna supposedly smells amazing (rumour is it’s Killian’s Love Don’t Be Shy, $385 at peonymelbourne.com.au) and we’ve done our fair share of digging to find out which perfumes celebrities actually wear.

But we never considered that perhaps they don’t wear any. Or that they even skip deodorant altogether.

Yep, turns out there are some celebs who prefer to avoid antiperspirants or any kind of odour-busting products for that matter.

And we get it, deodorant isn’t everyone’s thing and for some, natural deodorants are the only way to go.

So if you’ve been thinking about what gets put on your pits lately, here are the celebrities who choose to forego the bathroom staple and some of their reasons why.

Matthew McConaughey

Despite ditching deodorant and cologne altogether, Matthew McConaughey supposedly still smells alright, alright, alright.

His Tropic Thunder co-star Yvette Nicole Brown recently said on radio station SiriusXM, “I remember that Matthew McConaughey said that he did not use deodorant and that he didn’t have an odour. So my first thought was, ‘I’m going to get as close as I can to him to see if he’s right.’”

She’s referring to a 2008 Playboy interview where Matthew told the publication that Kate Hudson used to try and encourage his use of body spray on set.

“She always brings a salt rock, which is some natural deodorant, and says, ‘Would you please put this on?’ I just never wore it. No cologne, no deodorant.”

According to the actor, “the women in my life, including my mother, have all said, ‘Hey, your natural smell smells, one, like a man, and, two, smells like you.’”

And it seems Yvette confirms it. “’He does not have an odour. He smells like granola and good living. He has a sweet, sweet scent. That is just him, and it’s not musty or crazy.”

The 51-year-old supposedly showers multiple times a day and brushes his teeth up to five times to manage his personal hygiene instead.

Bradley Cooper

Another actor who prefers multiple showers over deodorant? Bradley Cooper.

“I don’t use deodorant really anymore,” he told Esquire. “I do take a lot of showers, so maybe that helps.”

The 46-year-old said he’ll usually jump under the running water three times a day. “In the morning and then at night. And after I work out, I’ll take a shower.”

Cameron Diaz

While it’s unclear if Cameron is against all kinds of deodorant, the 46-year-old actress previously told E! News that she’s not a fan of antiperspirants.

“Antiperspirant is really bad for you,” she stated. “You’re stinky because you use antiperspirant. It keeps all the stink in.”

Her advice to men at the time was to, “let it go and just trim your armpit hair so it doesn’t hold on to the scent.”

Julia Roberts

Not usually one to reveal much about her beauty routine, Julia Roberts was once asked by Oprah Winfrey if she prefers to wear natural deodorant.

The actress surprisingly responded with: “I don’t actually use deodorant. I don’t like to share that with a lot of people, but it’s just never been my thing.”

Kourtney Kardashian

The eldest Kardashian prefers to use natural and organic products in most avenues of her life, including deodorant. According to her website Poosh, the 42-year-old currently uses Erbaviva’s Jasmine and Grapefruit Organic Deodorant Spray ($43.90 at greenorganics.com.au).

But there was a time when she forewent deodorant completely (as revealed in an episode of Kourtney & Kim Take Miami),  because she believed it was bad for breastfeeding.

Shailene Woodley

Back in 2014, Shailene Woodley shared with InStyle a bunch of her DIY beauty recipes, including a homemade deodorant.

So while she doesn’t avoid the product altogether, she does prefer to use her own mix of baking soda, coconut oil, arrowroot powder, and a few drops of essential oil over store-bought.

  1. I absolutely hate it when I’m shopping and someone has walked down the aisle in front of me and reaks like BO. Like how can they not smell themselves and be repulsed? Or maybe they just don’t care? Either way it’s vile. Why should someone else have to smell you!

  2. I completely disagree, please wear deodorant whether it’s natural or not. You may think you smell alright but I can guarantee that other people don’t. And don’t use cologne/perfume in place of it, it makes you smell worse.

  3. I don’t wear one last couple of years. Have used up last of the natural based ones I had, then just stopped. Showering daily, using micellar (discovered this works better than any deo I have ever used in past!) under arms, some people use acid toners (as this works too, but micellars are so cheap and always get pushed free with some GWPs, so need to use them up hehe). Just keeping clean, rebalancing pH there and eating clean. Yeah, my body in general changed a lot since going on (almost all) raw plant based only food things.

  4. Ewwww these Celebrities can afford to buy the best deodorant in town, but prefer not to wear it. Personally I couldn’t go without using deodorant in the Summer Time I will use deodorant a couple of times a day.

  5. Yuck yuck yuck! I honestly don’t know how these people could not wear deodorants. Yeah OK, I guess it’s their ‘right’, but there’s nothing worse than being at the shops or elsewhere and someone passes who smells really strong of BO. It’s awful! Or even worse, someone sits down next to or near you on a train or bus! Eeekkkkkkk! Come on people, get real! A spray of deodorant won’t hurt you, but it will sure benefit everyone else.

  6. Ummm. I know I stink without it. I try to stick to natural in the coolest months but I’m back on the Mitchum in summer unless I can guarantee multiple showers in the day. I think for skin health less showering and natural deo is best.

  7. Anti-perspirant is a must. Its great that some people think their pits don’t stink and great if that’s the case but they might need to check with someone more objective than a mother or girlfriend. When you’re a celeb with hiring and firing rights, some people are afraid to be honest.

  8. Taking multiple showers everyday is a luxury most of us can’t afford–how do you get any work done, and how wasteful is it? Brushing teeth 5x a day? Even Seinfeld doesn’t brush that often.

  9. I wear anti-perspirant every day in summer. It’s part of my morning routine and works at keeping BO away. If, on the odd occasion, I don’t apply anti-perspirant, I can certainly smell my pits by the afternoon. I don’t need to apply it as much in winter.

  10. I’m not against it at all but I just don’t hardly ever wear it either. If I’m going to somewhere important or out to a major event I’ll put some on then but otherwise I don’t really need it. I just don’t even have feet that stink – I dunno why. I do shower a lot and I’m not very hairy so maybe that all helps too. I also drink a lot of green organic smoothies with mint and parsley in them so maybe that helps as well!

  11. This is great! I don’t use deodorant. I do a lot of yoga and am clean. Inside and out. Makes me like Bradley Cooper even more!! (And the others). Too many are aerosol and too many are toxic to us and to the atmosphere.

  12. If Matty showers several times a day to manage his body odour he is going to dry out his skin and waste water. I can get away with a natural deodorent in winter but in the warmer weather I use anti perspirant.

  13. I am someone that wear deodorant every day but I don’t use aerosols and have used Nivea for years now and wouldn’t change to nothing.

My ex brother in law never used deodorant but he did use talcum powder which was worse when he got all sweaty.

I could not walk out the door and not have deodorant on. Maybe I am old school but that is my honest opinion.

  14. “The 51-year-old supposedly showers multiple times a day and brushes his teeth up to five times to manage his personal hygiene instead”.

At that rate he will wear out his tooth enamel. Twice a day is sufficient.

I can only tolerate crystal deodorants and natural don’t work on me. But crystals don’t really work all that well (not lasting) with prevention of BO. So I learned this hack from Dr Dray and I use an anti-acne wash which I leave on my pits in the shower for about 5 mins. It makes such a difference.

  15. I always wear deodorant and as others have said if someone has BO and I’m near them I’m always concerned that people may think that it’s me!
If I’ve just removed underarm hair then I use a natural anti perspirant/deodorant.

  16. I gave up antiperspirant years ago and now only use deodorants, aluminum free. There is no way I would use nothing, I know I have underarm odour, some days bad, some days not too bad but wouldn’t wish that pong on others.

  17. I don’t usually wear deodorant during the winter months, however, I do apply a body oil under my arms as well as on other parts of the body. But in summer I definitely wear a natural deodorant.

  18. Also even when I am doing strenuous exercise I don’t get the offensive BO smell like I used to with roll on. Spray deodorants always caused me to have allergic reaction, it really hurt my armpits and why I moved away from them to a natural product.

  19. I went off chemical deodorants a few years back. I did trial so many brands that are some recommended in Australia and found that the ‘no pong ‘ paste deodorant worked for me from the get go.

  20. I don’t have much BO (foot odour is a different story) and I could last a day without deodorant but there is a risk that I could smell one day and I don’t want to risk being the stinky one.
Showering three times a day would also help with living without deodorant but showering that often is a bit over the top.

  21. I no longer use any of the commercial deodorants you can but in the supermarket or chemist and prefer using an aluminium and alcohol free deodorant. It is much easier to get away with during the cooler months, however summer is a different story and I always carry my deodorant with me as I usually need to reapply it at some stage.

  22. I wear deodorant less in the winter. In the summer I find if I scrub quite hard with a louffe under my arms, I tend to be less stinky. Something I was told to do as a teenager when I had a huge problem with sweating. It definitely helps. Showering multitude times a day may help with not wearing deodorant, but unfortunately it will also strip your body of those natural oils. Sounds like a dramatic way to deal with something that has an easier solution.
