The floriental fragrances to try if your tastes are tricky to pin down

The floriental fragrances to try if your tastes are tricky to pin down

Fragrances generally fit into one of four families: floral, oriental, woody or fresh. But when you find a scent that blurs the lines between two of the groups? That’s where the magic happens.

And while fruity florals and spicy woods are the most popular of the hybrid categories, we think it’s time the floriental fragrance family got the attention it deserves.

And while ‘floriental’ may sound like it could be the name of a Game of Thrones character, the fragrance family itself is quite spectacular.

Part floral, part oriental, it’s a category ideal for those who like to mix the sweet and the spicy, as opposed to the sweet and sweet combo of fruity and floral, or the spice on spice mix of orientals and woods. Floriental fragrances offer the best of both olfactory worlds.

So what exactly counts as a floriental scent, you ask? They tend to mix classic floral notes like rose, gardenia or peony with sensual ones of amber and vanilla – part sweet, part spicy, all around stunning.

Here are the floriental fragrances bound to convince you to get in on the goodness.

Aerin

Aerin Amber Musk EDP ($180, esteelauder.com.au)

A classic and comforting take on the floriental family, this spritz features hearty notes of rose and musk.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé Heat

It opens super floral with orchid and magnolia, but soon dries down into a tonka bean and honeysuckle hybrid.

Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Nuit Blanche

A cooler take on its sweeter predessecor, its mix is made up of peony and coriander over a vanilla and musk base.

Lush

Lush Imogen Rose

Rose may get top billing, but this isn’t just another through-and-through floral – the basil steers it clear of girly territory.

Diptyque

Diptyque Ofresia EDT ($184, mecca.com.au)

A femme (but not too femme) fusion of freesia and pepper, it’s perfect for anyone after an unconventional floral.

Comme Des Garcons

Comme Des Garcons Floriental EDP ($139, mecca.com.au)

You know this one’s a true floriental – it’s in the name. Built around the Cistus flower, it blends floral notes with vetiver and incense.

  1. Black Opium is such a beautiful fragrance, but it doesn’t suit me. I’m thinking that the Aerin Amber Musk would. I’m heading into the city on Friday, so I’ll go and test it.

  2. Comme Des Garcon sounds truly beautiful. I like a heavier perfume mix in cooler weather. My new obsession Gabrielle by Chanel is such a rich creamy floral, I think it fits into this category.

  3. I went to a perfume party once (similar format to a Tupperware party) and boy oh boy did I have a huge headache by the end of the night, as did most of the guests.

  4. Aerin Amber Musk absolutely delivers in the sexy, sensual stakes. It hugs close to the skin, but longevity is amazing. Not a fan of Imogen Rose from Lush. Far too Nanny and powdery for me. I felt like sneezing often. I much prefer, if I'm going to Rose Town, a cleaner, lemony rose fragrance.

  5. Hi rose, I would love to try the Lancome perfume I heard so much about it.

I just wanted to let you know that Mecca brought back the Sol de Janeiro bum bum jet set that has the body mist. It is such a great value for money.

  6. I do like the oriental scents more, they last longer and has more uniqueness in them. I love musk it is my ultimate fragrance. Especially the musk that comes from the middle east it is really organic and pure.

I used the Abdul Samad Quraishi perfumes, it is such a niche brand, like Amouage, very high-end. And their musk is top-notch, I mean lasts for days I missed it so much.

  7. I do love the new Opium which is much less overpowering than the original. I have the Aerin in Waterlily which is absolutely divine. Its my extra special occasion perfume due to the price tag.
