SICK OF SPAMMERS >:(

I’ve a question – if we see one of those annoying spammers pushing their rubbish (as Mollygirl so eloquently put it) on a thread, do we alert the moderator, or is there somewhere we can report to?

I’m really tired of it – it’s pollution to the feel-good bh environment.

Unfortunately I was reported as a spammer in my first few weeks! I was participating in a forum about brands that should be on beuatyheaven, and mentioned my grandfathers business. I got a few questions asking, and as I replied about 3 weeks later, the super eager me copied and pasted my message and replied to all three of them! And suddenly I was being reported and losing points, and I felt so bad. So yes, there are a few newbies out here who may just be wanting to be helpful, and you can never really know.

Here’s a new spammer, keeps talking about making money online etc, don’t click on the link she is using guys! It is most likely a scam, or worse a virus

    francesphorn is her username

I have flagged her comment as spam

    it’s usually easy to spot.

They’ll be newly signed up, and posting dubious links to non-beauty related products they’re trying to sell.

Or they’ll post around a few topics with links talking constantly about a single brand, often with links to a shop or similar.

We get them regularly, every forum unfortunately gets unwanted and irritating spam!

btw welcome to the forum 🙂

How do you actually know if it is a spammer or not?

Over the spam! Most of the forums I was just catching up on were spam ones. How annoying!

Hey uhhh, Alice are you into IT by any chance?

No. I’m a mechanical engineer. Computers are just a tool.

Mind you, I do occasionally get IT people asking for my help when it comes to Linux computers. 😉

ooohh, you sound so techy – I love it!

what does a mechanical engineer do? this is so not the right thread for this conversation but it sounds interesting and I would like to know!

Commenting on a thread that spammers have started or posted in without actually quoting them isn’t a big issue. The main downside is that in doing so, you “bump” the thread to the top of recent activity.

As I’ve mentioned before, while we do still occasionally get spam that is intended to trick forum readers into going to a dangerous web site that is designed to use a bug in your web browser to install malware (viruses etc) on your computer, the main purpose of a lot of spam now is to make the links turn up in so many places that search engine software such as Google are tricked into putting those sites closer to the top of any relevant web search. It’s called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

A lot of businesses are sent spam emails offering SEO services, and they like the idea of being at the top of a relevant search, so without thinking about the fact that the process might be unethical, they pay the spammers to optimise their search engine position, and off it goes.

Oh wow, did not know that! That’s so sneaky. I used to think that spammers just “advertise” whatever they’re selling in an annoying way but this is getting all technical!
