Please let members moderate!

BH – This is a request from all forum regulars who are absolutely fed up with the invasion of spambots.

Can some of us be given moderator powers to remove the rubbish as it comes in? even if a temporary stop gap, while you work on the bigger issue?

just so I don’t log on the forum, like tonight, and find it’s 75% spammers over the first few columns, everyone doesn’t want to see an amazing forum wrecked in this manner.

I’m sure quite a few of us would volunteer to moderate and delete the spam we see & help you resolve it

Bumping this thread to say that Platinum Members (there are a lot so, probably just the most active) should be allowed to moderate the forums.
Every time I log in there are several spam posts, some which were reported days ago!

    Hi beauties,

Thank you so much for your ongoing advice and support with spam. And thank you also for going to so much effort to report it to us. Those two recent serial spammer accounts have now been deleted from bh.

Thanks for these suggestions – they are fantastic! We really appreciate them and are going to take them into our next development meeting.

    Thanks again, beauties!

I have just emailed BH about the spam in the forums. I am bumping this post so that there is a better chance that BH sees my summary of suggested ideas on ways to minimise the spam.

I’m frustrated with having to report spam each time that I visit the forums. Spam has been a constant issue since I joined BH (in 2013), and it continues to be an issue. This thread has some fantastic suggestions by members on how to minimise spam. I encourage BH staff to read through this thread and do a bit more to reduce the spam. All of the members have made great suggestions, but AliceJaneInNewcastle, who has lots of technical knowledge in this area. has made some excellent suggestions. I have summarised the suggestions in this thread here:

    1. BH selects a few members to moderate the forums and deal with spam as it appears.

    2. Have all posts by newly signed up members moderated before they are allowed to be visible in the forums.

    3. Do not allow new members to create new threads until they have reached a certain amount of posts.

    4. BH automatically hides someone’s post if a certain amount of people have reported it as spam. Then BH can check the post to see if it is spam or not.

    5. New members have to fill out a CAPTCHA or a brief beauty-related questionnaire before signing up. Apparently, spammers have found ways to get around CAPTCHA, so this may not work. However, maybe some spammers might not bother filling in a questionnaire.

    6. Do not allow people from outside of Australia to comment on forums and BH articles (spammers sometimes post on articles). Most spammers seem to live overseas, as evidenced by their poor command of the English language, comments that make no sense etc.

    Additional suggestion by me:

Educate BH members on how to identify what I call “sneaky spam”. These are the posts where the spammer has attempted to conceal links or product/brand names within text. Lots of members respond to sneaky spammers, assuming that their questions are genuine. A few sneaky spammers try to pretend that they’re genuine members by making non-spam comments on other threads. Some spammers start a thread with one username, then they answer their own question with another username. Then later, they spam that thread with links to products, websites etc.

I have just emailed the general BH email address about the two annoying spammers Jaynisha simmons and Taylor Morgan. I have also asked that they read this thread and to do something about the ongoing issue of spam.

BH, can you please, please, please do something about the spam in the forums? It has always been an issue, but I’m becoming increasingly fed up with having to report so much of it.

There are two spammers Jaynisha simmons and Taylor Morgan (probably the same person) that have been serial spammers. BH deletes the spam that I have flagged, but the spammers keep posting more spam in the threads that they have started. Are you able to archive or delete their threads? Are you able to block their IP addresses?

This would definitely make the process run more smoothly

I always liked A.Js ideas on treating spammers. Spammers only really started a few years ago, they weren’t around in the beginning.

Lately, they are coming more and more.

  • Maybe when you join, your first 10 or 2o posts are not posted straight away, they have to be approved, that way the spam is not posted
