BEWARE SCAM EMAIL GOING AROUND ABOUT PAYPAL!

Hi everyone! This is no spam from myself so don’t be alarmed!

I don’t normally post this kind of stuff but because this scam email was in my inbox instead of junk I thought I should warn everyone as it was a bit alarming.

I received an email this morning from someone pretending to be paypal, telling me that my account information needed to be updated as I now have limited access. Do not click on the link that says click here!

Thankfully I have always been wary with emails from people I do not know and most of the time it goes into my junk. I am posting this as so many people have been apparently caught out and people like my mum (who hardly uses the Internet) would not recognise that this is a scam if she received the email.

This email is definitely trying to steal your personal information and I have forwarded the email to PayPals scam team (spoof@paypal.com).

I will include a picture below that includes the original scam email which I forwarded to PayPal so that you know what to look for if you receive one, I drew over one part of the email that “had” my account number.

I really don’t know what the problem can be. Not sure it is somehow related to scammers, unless they sent you a virused link. So try to do the following. Go click on my link and follow their step-by-step instructions. I am sure you haven’t even tried to clean your Chrome cache. And this can slow down your mail very much, by the way.

Of course Gmail should have a spam button! Don’t you see it in your menu? I can’t help you right now because my Gmail is not working in Chrome! And that makes me crazy!!

That’s really scary! It’s so frustrating how people try and take your money in horrible ways ):

i always type the paypal link into my browser. It helps stop me from clicking the link and falling into prey.

If you want, you can report that to Paypal

I got it this morning, luckily it went to my spam as well but my partner also got one and was calling me to see if it was legit. I would have killed him if he put the account details in!

I received the same email, strange thing is, I don’t have paypal on that email address, so instantly hit the spam button.

I get these fairly regularly. They usually go to my Junk folder, but occasionally I go through & forward them to phishing@Paypal.com. The Spoof email address is for fake PayPal websites, but their security team will know what to do.

Remember: PayPal never refer to you as “Dear member,” they always use your full name.

If you can’t remember where to send fake PayPal emails, always open PayPal IN A SEPARATE WINDOW OR TAB. TYPE THE URL YOURSELF, DON’T EVER CLICK ANY LINKS, EVEN IF THEY APPEAR TO SAY PAYPAL.

Does Gmail have a spam option?

Thanks for that info misfortune8! I sent it to the spoof email address as when I looked up the email I received that is going round PayPal said to forward that particular email.

I honestly feel sorry for those who wouldn`t know that this is a scam, but In saying that I`ve had my email hacked before without even opening scam/phishing emails!
The internet is great but there`s so many things that can go wrong, iPads and iPhones ask if you want to save your passwords now! (I don`t). There`s also those “”win a Bunnings voucher”” posts on Facebook and such that if you didn`t know it was a scam you`d get caught out. I`m very careful about everything and clear my browsing history out daily (apart from when I`m doing uni essays because I might forget to reference something and need to go back and find it).

Paypal and there was an ANZ one going around recently too about clicking to follow the link to confirm your account details.

On the same line, there is a phone scam from the ATO stating that you owe money on your income tax account and need to pay up asap. The ATO will always contact you via written correspondence, this is a complete hoax.

I will never open any banking emails (even if they are genuine) as all my banking is done via online and if I`m unsure I will ring them.

It`s interesting you mention phone scams, I rarely answer any unknown (private or displayed number) calls unless I`m expecting a call, I had someone call me the other night on my mobile but I let it ring out. I googled the phone number and it was some Nigerian scam! I had another call a week or so ago, didn`t answer as it wasn`t a local call and googled it only to find another scam about wanting them to invest all your super!

How they get mobile numbers is beyond me as I am super careful about who has my number. My mum gets atleast 3 unwanted calls a day even after she tells them to stop harassing her, you can block these numbers all you want but they will keep calling on different numbers.

They try our home phone (which is registered on the Do not call register) and my mobile. I`m like you, don`t answer a private/unknown call. Just bugs me that they would try it on the elderly and scare them thinking they are in major trouble with the ATO

Get these all the time. As Margaret mentioned if you want to check your account log into the genuine site and don’t click any links in the emails. There are so many scams for banks, govt agencies, debt collectors and it can be easy to be fooled.

About a month ago I was receiving these kinds of emails weekly; like two to three times a week. I knew they were scams, as, like you’ve pointed out, the email address they come from is certainly not a paypal email. Also, you can pick up grammatical errors very easily – like where they say ‘your account has been Limited’. The ‘L’ should not be a capital. I’ve been logging into my paypal account via the genuine sit (certainly not by clicking any link in the scam email) and just checking to see if there’s been any movement and it’s all okay.
