Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP or GP) Contact Lenses

Im a glasses wearer and have recently heard about Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP or GP) Contact Lenses that you wear at night during when you sleep and then remove them with a suction like thing in the morning and it supposidly reshapes the eye into seeing clear for the whole day without wearing contacts/glasses.

Just wondering if anyone out there uses these contact elnses and can give me some more information about them!

Good luck with your eye exam LV! There are so many brands nowadays of soft ones and some great innovatiions too – like the dailies so I reckon you’ll end up finding some – even if it is a matter of trying a few different types. : )

thanks very much for the advice, I’m going for my annual eye checkup early 2013.

I honestly haven’t thought of returning to lenses, but I’d love to try them again – much prefer them to glasses. fingers crossed I’ll get a working set that suit

I’m in a health fund which pays only $225 back toward them annually. But atleast that’s something because we now claim back $225 also for my 12 year old. So $450 combined isn’t anything to sneeze at I suppose! I reckon my health fund is a bit on the stingey side though! You may have a much better health fund than me, which probably pays more.

For each of us, my daughter and I, it costs ‘out of pocket’ around another $400 a year each. The boxes can be bought for around $55 for a box of 90 over the internet – that lasts 45 days (two a day) and so around a month and a half costs $55 or so. They are more expensive from my friendly local optom – around $100 a box, so it’s much more worth it for me to buy them over the net.

Most good optoms would have free trial packs of these (Focus Dailies) and could give you a free sample to try to see how they go with your dry eyes.

I’ve never tried those rigid ones. I’ve been wearing contacts for over 20 years and I love my soft dailies. I never have to clean them because I just chuck them out at the end of each day! My 12 year old has shortsighted eyes and she’s also wearing the soft dailies like me too. She loves them!

That’s all I know. Hope it helps a bit.

I used to use the “clean at home daily” ones, unfortunately I suffer dry eyes & can’t use any contacts anymore, but I love the idea of wear, throw away – is it an expensive option though, how much does it cost a day approximately?

I’ve not worn RGP’s, but I do have a son going through substantial treatment/visits to his optometrist for fittings / amendments to ones he now has – he’s got a disease that could cause blindness, with the best treatment currently being specially designed RGP’s.

So I’ve learnt a LOT about RGP’s, how they work & downsides / advantages over the past few months. I’d not recommend a long wearing product. In theory, sounds great – in practice I know how irritating these hard lens are – how my son says his eyes itch – how he’ll only wear them a few hours a day maximum, before complaining of the itch, or them irritating. and the suction cup is not nice – my son won’t use one, preferring to do the removal manually. Personally I’d go the option of contact lens for daytime wear, and a soft lens too – RGP’s are a challenge to use long term

Oh wow, after reading that, i’d definately just stick to trying the daily contact lenses and stay away from the RGP lenses!

soft lenses are fantastic, have you tried them yet? I think you’d like them, and they’re so easy to get used to / gentle

I’ve never tried contact lenses before. I’ve only ever used my glasses in class when copying down something from the board but now that ive finished with school and heading to uni next year, i’d like something more comfortable and efficient so im going to look into the daily soft contact lenses for sure.Though i might need some time getting used to those too

I wear daily contact lenses and asked my optometrist about them. He didn’t really recommend them and said that there are more hazards and risks associated with them versus normal contacts, obviously. I can see the benefit, but frankly I’d be way to scared to wear them myself haha xx

I’m sure i’d be scared too! The thought of plunging something onto your eye, i dont think i could handle it!
