What do i wear to a year 12 formal!?!?!

okay so i’ve been asked to go to a year 12 formal thats coming up soon, but i’m in year 11. So i’ve never been to an actual formal before, as my year 11 one is ages away!
should i be getting a long dress or a short one??
and how ‘fancy’ should it be?
also any ideas of where to get the dress from in Melbourne.
help!!

It’s best to check the dress code, as some schools are very strict about what is acceptable. The dress code should be on the ticket. Formal is short for “Formal Dinner Dance”, and in the strict definition of formal wear, the gown should be long. I know our school turned one girl away for wearing a short dress. As for how fancy it should be, let your own tastes guide you. One girl in my year wore an incredible ballgown (HUGE skirt!), others wore straight-skirted sheath dresses, while others went with corset top/flouncy bottom combos.

I have my yr 10 formal this year 🙂

I have a dress – its not a cocktail dress, but I don’t know how to describe it, so I will post a pic.
It comes up just between my knee and mid thigh. I have shoes to go with it

It kinda depends on your height. I can’t wear long dresses – they are too long, and make me look super short. So short dresses lengthen my legs, so I look taller.

Its kinda finding what suits your height and your body size/shape.

To my year 12 formal about a year and a half ago i wore a short dress that I got from Myer and to dress it up a bit more i wore long black gloves. In hindsight it was a little too short because whenever i sat down at the table i had to pull it down and it kept coming up a little bit too much! There was probably equal amounts of girls wearing long dresses as short though so its really up to you, but short dresses are generally a lot cheaper and re-usable! You might be able to get something kinda between length if your not sure.

Wear whatever you feel most comfortable in! It’s no fun spending all night stressing about your dress.

But I do agree about short dresses being value for money, as you can usually dress them down and wear them to parties/other events. It’s harder to do that with a long dress.

My y12 formal was last year, and I just wore a short black cocktail/party dress with a black blazer over it for a more ‘formal’ look. I got my dress from Dotti for about $80, but i’m kicking myself over it now… I couldve gotten something in exactly the same design for much much less!

Anyway, don’t stress too much about it, there were some girls who looked like they were literally wearing curtains or sheets!

My yr12 formal was 12 years ago (damn…I got old!!) and I wore a long dress but wish i wore a short one. I wore a short one to my yr10 then thought i’d do something different for yr12 but I should have gone with what i am comfortable – short suits me way more.

Also, if you get a long one it is unlikely you will wear it again, however if you get a classy party dress you’d probably get more wear out of it. If you get your hair done quite formally it will dress up a party dress to make it look more formal as well.

Colour-wise almost anything goes as well. So just wear whatever colour suits you most.

I think it’s an old fashioned idea in which year 12 formal dresses need to be long (long gowns), but it’s quite flexible now. I agree with the above comment in wearing something comfortable, the last thing you want is worrying about your dress falling off or something. I wore a short dress to my year 12 formal a few years ago. But plenty of girls wore long dresses to my year 12 formal, I just can’t pull it off. Start with finding something comfortable then branch out. Have fun!

    Hey!
You must be pretty excited!! Something that might help you get some idea’s, Google image ‘formal dresses’ and even do a search on hair and make up! I did this for some idea’s for my wedding! 😀
Tip: Wear a dress you feel comfortable in! One you can dance around in!

My recommendation would be to get a short dress that is kind of like a cocktail dress. Really anything goes so don’t worry too much. Some of those great little Asian dress shops have the perfect kind of clothes that aren’t expensive.Just have a pretty dress nice makeup and a nice hairdo. The evening is really about having fun so def don’t stress about it.
