What are the best DIY hair dye kits?

I am after a really good hair dye. I want to dye my hair back to its original colour (dark brown – not quite black).

I played around with a box dye a few months ago that came with highlights. It’s now a medium brown with some aurburn highlights. It’s okay – but regrowth will be a bit funny as it grows out its starting to now). I haven’t really dyed my hair that much, maybe only 3-4 times since I’ve been 17. (21 now).

I want a dye thats not going to fade, I really want vibrant dark brown. What dyes have you used that you’ve been happy with?

I got a free sample of the nex Clairol Nice n Easy mousse colour. I just have to say – its bloody toxic. I was in a ventilated bathroom and thought i was about to pass out with the smell. Besides that, it was pretty easy to apply although not as easy as i thought. Also something weired happened with the colour???? My hair was medium brown and i put a blonde shade through it. I didn’t expect it to go blonde but the result i came out with was my hair was DARKER than before so it is now darker brown instead of medium from a blonde mix????? Go figure….it still looks ok though.

I tried garnier and I’m happy with it, but i’ll I have to wait for a few weeks to see if doesn’t fade or anything.

Loreal Preference or Excell 10 are both great products.
I disagree with the comments about Schwarzkopf. I found that either the Schwarzkopf Live Salon Permanent or Live Brilliance both work great on my hair, I didn’t redye my hair for 2 months and i still had wonderful colour.

same, its what I used to dye my hair red for almost three years!

I do like Loreal Casting Cream Gloss, (its nice and shiney!) and nice and easy has always worked well for me.

I love the smell of the casting cream gloss. and the super soft royal jelly conditioner…….

Me too! The conditioner always makes my hair all nice and curly without the frizz. I have a feeling that if I used it all the time though i’d get product buildup.

I’ve used Garnier before and I find that the colours always turn out too dark and patchy, that’s just my experience though. Hope it turns out well, Discomilk.

Oh yeah the other one I love is Clairol Nice N Easy. I’d have to say they are on par with Garnier.

I would suggest to stay away from Schwarzkopf, the colour fades real quick, as I’ve just found out myself!

I’d agree with that. I used it to dye someone else’s hair and it made it feel really dry and brittle and the colour was patchy.

I’ve had good results with various L’oreal colours as well as some Garnier, but I haven’t coloured my own hair in years.

Oh wow, thanks for letting me know lol… Fading is the last thing I want! haha so I’ve just gone up to priceline and I thought about getting either loreal or garnier as suggested by you girls and I ended up getting garnier. Hopefully it works 🙂

Good decison, Garnier stands out as being the best for me! There is one other one I like but I forgot the brand.

I have tried them all and the best long lasting ones are from L’Oreal 🙂
