Vitamins

Was wondering if you can take too many vitamin and mineral supplements (even at correct dosage of each) There seems to be so many that would be of benefit, but can there be a point when there is too many for your body to take?

I think most multivitamins and minerals should be used by both men and women. One difference you will find in the “”men`s”” vitamins is that they will not have much if any iron. Too many people are subject to iron overload, men especially so. If you are not told by a doctor that you are anemic, you should stay away from iron supplements.

I think either take a multivitamin or take a whole crapload of stuff every day which would equal a multi lol.
I choose the latter as I doubt the doses in most multis are enough to have as great an effect as take a high dose of each.

Some u do have to watch out for. Eg, Vit A and Selenium are fatal in high doses, some shouldn`t be taken at the same time, some CANT be taken with food, some MUST be taken with food, some affect prescriptions meds like you cant have St Johns Wort while you are on the Pill as it reduces its effectiveness (by up to 80% i think – scary!!!)

That last one is a bummer cos I used to take St Johns Wort before I was on the pill to help with a bout of depression I had and i have to say it really worked for me. And i felt great taking it as its so much better to use natural alternatives to chemical anti-depressants.

It could be bad if you don`t know what you are doing.
Many vitamins and minerals `compete` for absorption at the same receptor sites in the body, so you could really be throwing your money down the toilet as taking some nutrients together effectively cancels them out, if you know what I mean.
It also depends on why you want to take them. Taking supplements can mask underlying conditions-eg you shouldn`t just start yourself on an iron supplement for low energy, unless you`ve had a blood test to confirm-can mask serious forms of anaemia or deficiencies.

If you are wanting to take supplements, can I suggest you see a naturopath. They are well trained in prescribing them. If finances are an issue, you could try the schools that run the courses-they all have student clinics at eithe free or incredibly reduced cost.

Omg scentsation, i am so thinking the same thing. I am in the “”should i/shouldn`t i/beauty-in-a-bottle/too-much-of-a-good-thing”” camp!!! i used to take a massive cocktail of vitamins/minerals/herbs in capsule form daily…..now ive cut down to about half that. My eating can get kind of erratic with frequent dieting phases and a more laid-back approach to eating during other times. So i tend to rely in supplements.
