Truefood Guide

After reading an article in todays’ Sydney Morning Herald about a new guide to assist consumers wanting to buy processed food without genetically modified ingredients, I feel really annoyed. Some of the largest food companies in Australia seem to think consumers don’t have the right to know what they’re eating.
The Truefood Guide lists the companies who are happy to reveal whether they use GM food in their products and those that aren’t. It looks like I won’t be eating vegemite anytime soon!

Big companies are pressuring Aussie wheat growers to use GM crops so Greenpeace are trying to raise funds and awareness at the moment about GM foods. Their fundraising is to also help print free copies of the True Food Guide 2012. There are some scary facts that they point out. It is terrible how little we consumers are given labelling wise on foods. I have noticed random items that state Not GM on their food so i guess thats a positive as long as its truth.

I guess GM food hasn’t been around for very long, so hopefully we haven’t ingested toooo much…its sad tho, cos vegemite on toast was one of my comfort foods:(

Actually GM foods have been on the market for around 20 years now so chances are we have eaten a bit, though I am unsure how much is actually grown in Australia. If you ahve a look at this wiki article:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetically_modified_food
you can see that in the states some of their crops, like corn, are almost all now GM, but then worldwide the percentage is much lower. If you have ever eaten/drunk anything with soybeans in it then you most likely have consumed GM food as it looks like most of the worlds crops are GM.

I actually remember reading something about some countries banning vegemite for a high sodium content.
Its not confirmed it contains GM ingredients only the company wont say, which I guess most assume it is a positive.
