Stripping back my hair colour. Eeek!

I am getting married in 5 months. I have shoulder length coloured hair that is currently a dark brown. My hair is normally salt and pepper grey. The dark brown was an accident that I am regretting as it doesn’t suit my skin colour. I have been dying my own hair for years as it grows very quickly and usually needs colouring every two weeks. I have spoken to the hairdresser and she suggested that it should be stripped back. I am terrified this will dry it out and even snap it off, even though she has assured me she will be very careful. In the past it became very dry when I had streaks through it and the ends went fuzzy. Is there anything else anyone recommends that is more gentle that can lighten it one shade? I would like it as long as possible for the wedding for an updo.
Thanks in advance.

Definitely go to a hairdresser and get it done. There are products out that claim to remove the colour in your hair and get it back to it’s natural shade but they’re very expensive and do hardly anything. I tried the Cremacolor one from Priceline and had very little success with it after having dyed black hair. Plus it made my hair awfully dry, I pretty much let it grow out and cut off the dead bits. So don’t take any chances, take your hairdresser’s advice. You’re more likely to damage your hair by trying to do it yourself.

In the US they have a product by i think loreal that peels off the colour without bleaching it. I can’t for the life of my remember what it’s called but perhaps someone can help me. I know you can get it on Ebay- it might be worth trying.

I’ve had my hair stripped back before and I had no problems because I went to a hairdresser who specialized in in. It’s safe as long as you get someone with lots of experience, proof that they can do a good job and to follow their aftercare instructions, if they’re a good hairdresser they’ll give you aftercare instructions and give you a list of recommended products to you and you should be perfect for your wedding and CONGRATS by the way…:D

I would say go with your hairdressers advice too, stripping a dark colour from your hair can result in a disaster if you do it wrong, and can wind up the wrong colour and brittle if you go about it the wrong way. I highly recommend Redken Extreme Anti-Snap as a nourishing treatment product to protect your hair afterward, its a wonderful product and has really strengthened my hair, which I have been dying for over 20 years 🙂

If she knows what she is doing, she can do it with minimal damage in most cases. It depends what condition your hair is in to start with. It wouldnt be something I would do myself. I recently had mine stripped back and there was very little damage because my hair dresser has been in business for decades and simply put she knows what she is doing. If you are looking to just lighten your overall colour, maybe streaks or foils might be a better way to go. Getting some highlights put through that will make your hair look overall just that little bit lighter.

When my hairdresser recently streaked my hair, she gave me specifc instructions on how to keep the ends healthy and less frizzy and suggested some products for me… This is different for every hair type though and would vary for each individual.

hopefully that helps you at least a little bit. Hopefully our resident hair dresser sees this and can give you some tips.
