Sodium Laureth sulfate

Has anyone else noticed that the main ingedient in most shampoos is sodium laureth sulfate? I suspect its a cleansing agent, rather like detergent.
Anyway my beef is that some cleanser
s also have this same thing-sodium laureth sulfate. Are cleansing agents really good for our skin? I suspect no. I have an Olay cleanser with that exact ingedient. No wonder my skin feels dry and tight after I use it.

    Bump!
Yesterday I was in the supermarket and was looking for a good body wash, but they ALL have sodium laureth/laurel (can`t remember which specifically) in them.. i was pretty annoyed, cos they all smelt SO GOOD but now I`m a little disheartened to see they all have it 🙁

I wish someone would ban it – Seen it linked to cancer in articles.

I wish the beauty world would make a stand!

Perfect time with all the talk of going green!

Glamourcat- I also prefer not to buy supermarket trash as I call it,glorified washing up detergent shampoos etc etc. I have been disapointed with Clinique also, Thier superdefense moisturizer doesnt absorb all that well into my skin and seems to just leave a greasy film on my face, gross out! I also had a free sample of that cleanser and like you I also felt like my skin had been hit with dishwashing detergent.
ps love your name, as i have 4 cats.also dont drink of smoke. I hate smoking.Actually I was out with my partner and he introduced me to another couple. We ended up eating together. Anyway,This woman said after her boyfriend ordered fisherman
s basket,Its your funeral, she said. then she went outside to smoke! Who`s funeral does she think???!!

Oh and whenever I have had a sample of a Clinique cleanser it has left my skin really dry. Upon reading the ingredients I surprisingly found SLS! It`s really hard to try and do the right thing when it comes to skincare and beauty. Some of my friends bag me cos they think I spend too much on skincare, etc, but they don`t realise that the garbage they buy from the supermarket can be so bad for them with all of the chemicals in them. Also, with good quality products you usually need to use a lot less and therefore they last longer, so buying cheapies is false economy. And just from a psychological perspective if we know we have paid more for something we are more likely to use it more sparingly.
A really fab thing about Alchemy shampoos and bodywashes is that you really only need to use a tiny amount, so they do last longer and are actually more economical than the commercial brands…

And what I spend on make-up/skincare is compensated by the fact that I don`t drink or smoke, I rarely go out (been out once all year!), I don`t buy fast food and I don`t buy heaps of clothes cos I like classic styles and I mix and match with funky things from places like Supre to keep my look updated, and accessories – I rarely throw out anything cos everything comes back into style at some point! 🙂 I have clothes from 15 years ago that when I wear them, people go “”I love that, where did you get it?!””, I say “”you cant buy this anywhere, it`s 15 years old!”” lol 🙂

Alchemy often have really good bundled packs available at health food stores and chemists so this makes it really economical, it really makes the products no more expensive than buying a `decent` brand from the supermarket or hair shop anyway. TVSN often have really good Alchemy deals as well where you might pay $40-50 for $90-100 worth of product. Davroe shampoos and conditioners are also SLS free. Don`t freak out though if you see chemicals like: sodium lauroul sarcosinate OR sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, as these as similar chemicals as SLS and will give the foam-factor – but these chemicals are extracted from coconut and palm basically nut and vegetable sources. Dove soap is SLS free, same with Redkin Sorbolene Soap Bars.

The problem with regular SLS is that a lot of its components are sourced from the byproducts of petrochemical production.
Soemthing that really freaks me out is that the J&J baby washes contain SLS! Go figure! but Alchemy products are safe to use on babies and kids and even though they are really gentle they even have a `senstive` range which is the one recommended for use on babies, etc…

Most commercial shampoos have this in,
“”Alecemy”” (if this is spelt right)
form the health food shop is none foaming,
have a look around the health food shop,
the manufacturers put “”SLS”” in a product, to show the consumer that the
product is working and even though its bad, most consumers think a products great
if they can see that its working, more pshycological, and its cheaper to put in a product than going “”natural””
I love beauty products, (but my partner wont go there, as he thinks all products are toxic and full of chemicals)
I guess you just have to find out the ones that are right for you, the more “”natural”” a product the more expensive its usually
    going to be…

I just checked my Palmolive `Naturals` body wash, SLS!!! Yeah really natural! I`m just glad my face products don`t contain it. I””ll have to check my shampoo and conditioner, I often have an irritated scalp.

ps: a good start to avoiding SLS is to switch to products by Alchemy/Akin and also Aveda – I love both brands 🙂
