Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulphate

I have been reading so many mixed views on whether or not Sodium Laureth or Lauryl Sulphate is good or bad for skin that I don’t know what to think. I understand that it’s like a detergent which that thought makes you not want anything to do with the product but I read so many good reviews on products that contain this that I just don’t know. I suffer pimples – I wouldn’t say severe acne but I always have more than 1 and they are so painful and seem to take ages to go away. I’ve tried various products from the natural/organic to cleansing milks but just can’t seem to get any result. I don’t expect perfection immediately but some kind of sign that it’s helping would be great. Recently I read on here that St Ives Green Tea Cleanser was great for breakouts, I rushed out to buy it only to read the ingredients and find that it contains Sodium Laureth Sulphate. I put it back on the shelf cos this stuff I read has got me so worried. What I would like is some opinions or advice on if I should be this concerned?

SLS doesn’t bother me in body washes but in certain cheap shampoo’s it causes havoc on my scalp. It makes my scalp look like it has dandruff so red, itchy and flaky, it all comes down to trial and error for me, some products are OK some are not, generally I know which brands to avoid, it seems like products with cheap ingredients are the ones that cause me problems, as I have used other more expensive salon formula’s that still contain sulphates but experience no irritations at all, so there must be different quality or even qualities of sulphates around too.

Iv’e stopped using SLS and parabens (derivative of PETROL EW) in my hair and skin care (90% still have the ol’ fake tan and hair treatments occasionally) and have loved how my skin now feels, my hair is loving it too.

    Some good brands are
    – Yes to Carrots shampoo/conditioner (AMAZING!! and CHEAP!)

-Sukin (both skin and hair, cheap, aussie and smells yum)

-Juice organics – a little more expensive but worth it (i used the facial moisturisor and cleanser, best thng i have done for my face, i barely break out anymore and my skin tone is much more even and SOOO much more hydrated)

    – Organic care shampoo/conditioner, probably the cheapest, but still a great product

    – Natures organics from safeway – SO CHEAP, i use the facial scrub for $4.99 normal price, its fabulous and gentle.

    Of course everybody kn

ows about rosehip oil, AMAZING for the skin

Yes to Sukin, i love the stuff, i have the Rosehip oil which has done wonderful stuff to my complexion, and the moisturisers; day and night, cleanser and exfoliator and some bubble bath for my girls, it smells divine and i trust that its natural and no nastys in it.

Thanks everyone for the response, alot of the stuff that was said I have read which is why I was so worried but then it is in so many products I just thought that maybe it was another of those things that gets around – nearly everything is bad for you or causes something these days. I understand that its the foaming agent and Im not one thats fussed whether my product foams or not I don’t see it as a better clean if my product foams – so thank you again I will definately not be buying anything more with this in it. I shall continue to read the ingredients panel on all products before buying to avoid the SLS.

My naturapath once told me to avoid anything with this ingredient in it, i cant not from the top of my mind remember why but all i remember is he telling me to avoid it, i think it strips the natural oils from the skin causing more problems to the skin as it doesnt have that barrier to protect the skin, but i heard it causes early skin aging also. Its so hard to avoid as its nearly in everything, i avoid it in soap as i use pure goats milk soap, but as far as creams, shampoos and so forth, its in a lot of things. Anyway yes try to avoid it.

I have read that lauryl sulphate is a bit better than laureth sulphate. It is almost imposiible to find a shampoo without these two ingredients.I currently use loreal shampoo and conditioner.

I hate sodium sulfates they totally dry out my skin and cause eczema and it can be really hard to find products without that’s why I use natural skincare. It’s not only whats in skincare and body washes, shampoo and stuff it’s also been used as garage cleansers, engine degreases ect. And truthfully I don’t want to be putting that on my skin. It totally wrecked my face to the point it was bleeding so I had to switch to natural.
