oily skin = bad afternoon makeup
can anyone help me with this problem?
I put my makeup on in the morning and it looks fine. I pack on the finishing powder (shine free) but EVERY SINGLE DAY by the time i arrive home from school, i look like ive caked on the makeup and its too dark for my complextion OR its slid off my face and i have next to no coverage…
ALSO….i tend to look different in different mirrors and lighting environments and i don’t know how i really look to other people!
– My bathroom mirror always has me looking ok
– Outside in the reflection of the car window, i look a little worse.
– In the bathroom at school i never look great
Im so confused and don’t know what to do and as a result of this oily/reflection problem i keep changing up my routine now i’m all over the place!
ugh! ok can anyone help me?? Im sick of looking like shit in the arvo.

hi thanks (: i did use my fingers today and it seemed to work nicely. I might try a brush tomorrow though.
I was a bit disappointed today when i looked in the mirror at school at recess my nose and cheek bones looked so oily!
And like it was too dark for my skin. However when i got home i looked in my mirror and asked my mum and it looked ok! just a bit oily. so i dunno i might put on more finishing powder and take blotting sheets tomorrow -

I bought maybelline dream matte mousse today and i have a question. What is the best way to apply it? Foundation brush, sponge, kabuki brush, fingers? I have no idea. I feel silly asking this and you guys have been an awesome help with my problem so can someone help me out again? Thanks so much!! (:
I haven’t really used a foundation with a consistency like the Dream Matte Mousse but I DID play with the tester a bit when I first saw it in stores… it seems like fingers will do the trick, and if you don’t want to just use your fingers, use your fingers to dab the foundation on key spots on your face… forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, etc… then spread it out with a foundation brush and pat it down with the brush to remove any streaks.

Thanks so much everyone! Sounds like I need to change my foundation. It’s relatively new though which is a bummer ):

I agree with the others, try to get your skin sorted out first, don’t use too many harsh products that end up drying your skin out, which then makes it more oily, and don’t swap and change products, stick a set skincare routine to target your oily skin concern. Then definitely find a good primer, remembering also a primer that works well for dry skin will not work that well on your oily skin. Do some research online for some ideas there. I have tried the Maybelline Mineral Powder and while it is cheap it is actually one of the worst mineral makeup products in terms of it being not particularly natural or mineral. It has heaps of fillers etc which only clog pores and congest your skin. I would start with a new foundation that has a matte finish. There are hundreds of affordable mineral foundations around that have all natural ingredients and even mineral liquid ones that would be better than that one you are using. Then you can always carry blotting papers and a small compact powder to alleviate any shine that develops during the day, the compact will also help freshen up your foundation so hopefully it will last you longer. Best of luck, keep us posted on how you get on 🙂

Following on from this, what are good mattifying primers that people recommend? I have combination to oily skin and I know the Clarins primer is a popular one for that (I’ve seen it mentioned on the forums heaps), but are there any other recs people have?
The reason I ask is that Clarins is quite pricey and also a bit creamy in consistency and I worry that it might not be the best mattifier.

I would avoid maybelline mineral makeup as much as you possibly can the light shades are not light enough for those with bare skin and I can speak from experince. Other maybelline foundations are great to but they feel very thick on the skin and can often look cakey. Try brands like Almay and Natio they offer a good coverage that’s not to heavy and are very light weight on the skin, also ensure that you are using a translucent powder and not a foundation/normal powder as these are much heavier coverage which can make it look cakey. Also if your skins really oily often foundation powder can end up looking orange.
The one thing I’ve learned is never try and get your makeup to look like the models on TV, in the end natural looking makeup with good skin will always look much better.

beautybabe111 has pretty much summed it up.
When i used to be in school i had the same thing, so i just didn’t wear foundation at all, and only stuck to a light powder. Besides, you shouldn’t be wearing all that makeup to school, I made a mistake of doing that years ago and my skin broke out so bad because of it. When your young its best to not wear that much makeup. It you are worried about skin problems, its best just to use light coverage. You may not like feeling ‘bare’ but in the long run your skin will be soooooo much better. Best things to use are blotting paper during summer time, less makeup during the day, and apply your makeup in natural light. I don’t apply makeup in the bathroom, I apply it in my bedroom with my blinds up so I have natural light.
Thanks so much for the advice! The only frustrating thing is that i only use maybelline mineral makeup, in the lightest shade. I dont cake it on or anything but thats just the way the oil makes it go sometimes but other times it just slides right off!
Maybeline foundations aren’t the best for young oily skin, plus I find that even the lightest shades are still to dark for my skin. I’ve had bad experiences with it, and I’ve broken out from them. Revlon keeps my skin clear and non-oily, but it is a bit more expensive. Try natio foundations and powders, they are the same price, if not less than maybeline products. Plus, natio products are more natural.

Changing routine constantly is one thing that gives me oily afternoon skin. Find a lightweight moisturiser first of all. Also blot THEN powder, don’t just powder over the top.
It sounds like your makeup is oxidising. We all have different pH and chemical makeup in our own skin so something that lasts all day on someone else might oxidise on you. I find I can’t use liquid foundation, but I can use BB creams. For most it’s the other way around.
Also don’t forgot to let your layers settle in your routine. Moisturiser, brush teeth, primer or sunscreen, moisturise legs, foundation, shoes, powder. I find breaking it up stops me loading on more than I need. Also how are you applying? I use way less and don’t look orange now that I use the right brush for my base. I used to use my fingers and layer so much stuff because it’d go streaky.
Disco’s tip was one of the biggest I learned too. I was a shocker for caked on makeup until I moved everything out of the dark bathroom where I had shadows on half my face and flourescent on the other. I always looked so uneven, even my eye makeup.
