Here`s my assessment of shopping in Patong & Bangkok.
Patong beach: counterfeit everything, Mac cosmetics, naked palettes, handbags, converse shoes, etc. All super expensive and pretending to be genuine – don`t bother.

Bangkok markets – second time around we stayed closer to MBK & checked out Pratanum markets, Platinum Fashion Mall & Computer City. Pratanum markets is mostly clothing, lots of very cheap but ugly clothing, and we got very, very lost . outside of the market has some nice things that are cheap though (woven sandals, souvenirs, clothing, etc). Platinum clothing markets is 5 levels of clothes, cosmetics, etc. I didn`t see prices but think that they`re quite expensive & the food court is a nightmare. Computer city is great & full of every phone & computer accessory that you can imagine and prices are very cheap.

In terms of safety, some nights traffic is grid locked from protests, there was an explosion near our hotel (we think, they never name locations) but westerners are in no danger. And all the tourist places are still open (even if tuk tuk drivers say they`re closed).

Can`t create new forum so posting my comment out here. Going to Thailand in March for 5 days. Want to know if it safe to be there. Which places to visit n shop… Any recommendation, please put forward…

Ooh you lucky duck! Are you heading to Patong? I would 100% recommend a boating trip run by a guy called Captain Mark. He`s a western Australian who runs small trips on a yacht and speedboat. It`s so much better than the mega tourist packed boats. Captain Mark and his crew are so friendly and you will be treated like a queen. I cannot recommend them more highly!

I am here at the moment and the only possibly unsafe place due to the protests is around the MBK centre. But I still went there and am fine, haha. But I wouldn`t reccomend it for shopping, everything there is available around koh San rd/rambutri (where I am staying) and cheaper. When I get back I`ll put up a more detailed list but basically clothing is the same everywhere, floating markets had some different cheaper stuff but is hard to get to (take a tour, don`t take a taxi). But honestly clothing is like Kmart/target prices (and all size 8 to 10) but massages/spa services are very cheap. I`ve only been in Bangkok for a week so I`ll let you know what Phuket is like when I get there. But its great – I`ve had a fish spa, foot massage and a manicure, all for 150b each ($6)
