New Rihanna Song

Does any one out there find it totally ironic that a couple of years ago Rihanna was the victim of abuse, now she has a song out claiming she quite likes “whips and chains”. What part of this am I missing. Oh and how do you explain S and M to young kids!! I am no prude (just ask my husband) but something about this feels slightly off. Different strokes for different folks but must the topic of a fairly extreme practice be marketed to appeal to tweenies and teenagers

    Just a thought…

some people say that life has progressed, we have rights and we can say what we like, however we like, along with less discipline, greater freedom, less consequences and more of the motto that we should live while we can…

but i just take one look at the youth of today, compare them with youths from the earlier eras and I shake my head. Is all of this actually breeding better behaved, more respectful, honorable young people? I dont believe so.

So while sex, drugs, S&M and all sorts of other issues were around many years ago, they have become more explicit, more accepted by younger and younger generations, and where years ago it was frowned upon to be the one who went around showing her ankles… now if you mention modesty you are the one standing out.

Personally I’d love for my little family to be back in the 40’s or 50’s… hell even the 60’s. Anywhere but here…

I’m not personally offended by much, consenting adults and each to their own and so on…. However, as a mum I would like to keep my little boy innocent for as long as he is a small child and it’s really hard. I used to enjoy video hits but now I won’t have it on as he is an observant little man and he is only three and a half so we won’t be watching for quite a few years yet. I worry about the attitudes to women portrayed in some of these clips. I also teach teenagers and they are too sexual at a young age. Primary teachers as starting to observe sexualized behaviour in children as young as seven and I don’t think this is healthy. It used to be that these sorts of clips were on really late at night which was fine as kids were in bed. The radio is another minefield as well. Songs used to be less explicit and kids didn’t usually know what the lyrics were even about until they were older.

Sorry for length of post, I was on a bit of a roll there lol… It is a bit tricky for parents these days though.

I hate all songs on the radio :-/ they are too sexual and it annoys me more when people at school sing them out loud. Like a recent one would be ‘I just had sex’ by the lonely islands. It’s quite a funny song but it’s not appropriate. I hate what these songs teach teens and how they think they’re ‘so cool’ belting it out at the top of their lungs. Gosh -.- I wish those american song writers would stop writing such songs….were they horny or something at the time? Why does things these days have to be so sexual :S
These days, i just stick to singers like regina spektar, Sarah Blasko and Lenka…they are much better 🙂
Say, has anyone heard the song ‘Put your records on’ By Corinne Bailey Rae? She rocks and that song is really soothing to listen to 🙂

I think good on her for moving on from her past demons.

there is so much sexual things in MOST songs these days

and you know what who cares

lol look back to the good old music most 80s music was about sexual connotations- think Madonna, Prince, Blondie for instance

go back even further to the 60s the beatles song “lucy in the sky with diamonds”- the beatles were on drugs when writing that

the 70s was filled with sexual lyrics.

I cannot stand any aspect of Rhianna or her annoying and inane music but I have to say, I do not see what’s wrong with her singing about sadomasochism.

Yes, she was a victim of domestic abuse but I don’t see how this makes singing about S&M ironic. She definitely didn’t consent to the domestic violence – which is never acceptable under any circumstances – but S&M in a sexual context between two consenting adults in a safe environment is a completely unrelated matter. The fact that she was in an abusive relationship doesn’t mean she cannot enjoy a sexual relationship with aspects of _consensual_ masochism.

This song doesn’t have anything to do with domestic violence but she has been in a couple of songs that do – ‘Love the Way You Lie’ with Eminem and ‘All of the Lights’ with Kanye West both make references to physical abuse . As much as I dislike her as an artiste, I think it’s quite brave of her. She’s not avoiding the topic because she knows everyone remembers it and what better way to address it and recover than through expressing yourself through art. It must be quite cathartic.

I think what’s more concerning is how popular this song is despite how one dimensional and poorly written it actually is. Sad day for music if this is what’s considered good nowadays.

    well said !

beauty heaven at work hey, you naughty girl. LOL. I know what you mean about my day, pads and tampons weren’t even mentioned on ads, but everyone anywhere could smoke. Oh the good ol days!!! Crazy. I suppose the thing about SM is I have read to many serial killer books which all have had sexual sadism involved. I was telling my daughter today about the Turo(excuse the spelling) Murders in Adelaide when I was growing up. Now this guy was good looking and picked up girls around 16 to 18 took them off to have sex, then asked to tie them up, well they all ended up dead. SM of course is something between consenting adults, and some people are ok with the rough stuff. I kind of wish that to appear attractive to the opposite sex women/women are being encouraged to take everything that little further. God I yab on, pity you don’t live next door so we could have a wine and solve the worlds problems, Thanks for the comment, don’t want to turn this into a slanging match and thank the powers that be that this is a decomcracy

It is really indecent song. i like the rythm of the song, but totally inappropriate to listen to my 6 yo stepson singing to it, with “sex in the air” etc etc. and the clip, wow! crazy!
