Makeup For Guys

Hi everybody, I’m new here but wow, I gotta admit, this is one very impressive website.

Well, my sister is a singer and in a few weeks time she will have a photoshoot for her CD cover; and she is also hiring a male model to pose with her. I am confident doing her makeup (with help of dozens of MAC Brushes and branded makeup) but I have no idea where to start when doing a guy’s makeup. I tried looking up tutorials on Youtube but they all look unnatural.

The CD cover theme is a romantic, vintage and innocent one; accompanied by vintage birds and bird cages. The male model will be wearing a vintage penguin suit and will look very classy. I want to produce a flawless complexion, defined eyes (but not too much eyeliner, maybe just beige champagne eyeshadow or something like that), enhanced cheekbones and healthy looking lips; while looking very natural at the same time.

Any tips? Thank – you so much ! <3

I have done male makeup on a few occasions. Beginning with foundation, use a more matte type of foundation as close to his natural skin colour as possible. Obviously, you don’t want to make it too thick, because you want it to be as natural as possible. A full coverage foundation would hep with the flawless complexion. Use concealer around the eyes and on any blemishes on the face. Set this with finishing powder. With the eyes, use a creamy coloured eyeliner on the inner rim of the eye, or a white eyeliner well blended, or with cream shadow patted on top. Brown mascara works well as a substitute for black if you want it to look more natural. Eyeshadow on the lids isn’t necessarily required, unless you want to create a socket eye, which you should stick to nudes and browns to keep in natural. To define the cheeks, use bronzer under the cheekbones, and a slight dusting on the temples and the jawline. With the lips, simply put some paw paw ointment or primer on the lips and allow it to sink in. Simply conditioning the lips generally works, although a slight dusting of pale pink matte eyeshadow or a slight amount of pink lipstick can work, too. Remember, in photography you need to make the makeup darker and more obvious than what you would normally wear to enhance the quality of your work and the photo. I hope this helps 🙂

Yes mineral powder is good, or a light coverage foundation and concealer if you need it. Be careful around any facial hair too. Contouring is good, but even that can look overdone on some men. I wouldn’t go any further than balm on a man’s lips, but it depends on the look you would want. I’m not too sure about how to go about eye makeup for men though, the more natural the better.

I’ve never done makeup or anything for men, but I would think keeping the colours used as close to his actual coloring as you can (lips etc) would be best, it seems like the second guys have makeup on it seems that much more obvious then it is on us lol! And apply sparingly to start and build if needed, again just so its as seamless and natural as possible 🙂

Hope the shoot goes well 🙂

Use some mineral powder or something like that for the complexion, and some contouring if you can.

I love gossmakeupartist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdDXptnOWj0 when you first posted this I thought contouring a definite must. The men usually have a chiseled look in most vintage images. Hopefully the youtube link I posted will help.
