Lifespan of Cosmetics

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone here has a habit of throwing out cosmetics after a certain period of time? I own so many products that I hardly ever finish them before they become old and are just sitting in my drawer. Does anyone have any rules they follow to ensure your cosmetics do not harbour bacteria and lead to skin imperfections?? TIA!

I use my makeup for a very long time. Years. If you are careful ad use clean brushes instead of your fingers, they’ll last for ages and still be hygienic.

I only throw something out if it has separated, dried up, or looks/smells funny. I actually think the makeup companies are a bit cheeky with making you feel like you have to replace your products after xx months. I think it’s a bit of a scam in a way to make you buy more product. I’ve had some products for years (and years!) with no problems at all. Even with mascara, I’ll use it until it’s dried out, and I’ve never had an issue. It’s only me using them, so it’s not like any bacteria is going to be from anyone but me!

Yes, you’re quite right Chicklet. The other reason cosmetic companies want us to throw things out prematurely is probably to protect themselves from lawsuits involving people having adverse reactions to stale products. My mum still hasn’t died from her 20 year old blush though! It’s funny to hear that other mums horde their old make-up too lol!

thank you for all your tips beauties! i’m like some people here where i’d feel hesitant to throw away my favourite but old lipstick and pretty packaging of some other products. it’s funny how it’s sometimes difficult to use up products before they get old and can be thrown out.

I pulled out a lipstick at tafe and told my friend that I found it in my mum’s makeup kit (that she stopped using for years) when I was 12. To this day it’s one of my favourite colours. The look that my friend gave me was priceless!

I’ve never had any issues with using mascara that’s a year old or lipsticks that are years old. Some lipsticks dry out and so then you have to throw them out but most products i’ve never had an issue with. I usually only throw away products if they’re absolutely terrible or are beyond saving (like the nail polish at the bottom of the bottle that goes all thick and gluggy).

I throw most things away as recommend on the packaging…however, I do have some powder eyeshadows that I have only ever used brushes on and they are quite old but they are too pretty to throw…and so far they are fine.

i usually buy a new mascara about every month .. i get sick of using the same product.. so im safe there , but as for eye make up (shadow / liners ) i throw them away every 6 months.. they make my eyes itchy and irritated if older than 6 months. i use most of my skin care in reasonable time. its easy to loose track of things though.

I just threw out about half of my beauty products (excluding skincare!) I’ve had some of these products for years so I knew it time for them to be ‘dumped’ hehe. I felt so good clearing all these unwanted products, so I can make more room for new beauty booty!! 🙂 It refreshed me too.
