astearel – 5 cents?? thats ridic. I got my first job at 13 at a cafe as a cleaner. I was a dishpig basically. Clean tables, make sure there was no litter outside, clean boards, knifes etc etc from the kitchen. 11 months later and I am a fully trained barrista, cook and serve at the cafe. They are currently talking about me opening up the little store at the surfclub (the cafe is at the beach) as a manager…. One month of hard work as dishpig, and look where I am now. My bosses are people I can tell my problems to, exam stress etc. I simply asked at the counter how old you had to be, and they said `can you work tommorrow 10am??””

Three weeks ago I got a second job working as an umpire at a local INdoor centre. If you can umpire netball, soccer, cricket, volleyball etc Ask around!!

Good luck job hunting (I have never submitted a resume!)

a lot of small businesses that will pay you cash in hand would probably be willing to employ you if you`re a little younger than you`re supposed to be. but then again, if you`re not “”officially”” on the books, they don`t have to pay you the legal minimum wage (although some might) and you`re not covered by work cover, don`t get super etc.

i worked in hospitality from about 14 and 8 months and they paid me cash in hand so it didn`t really matter that i wasn`t technically old enough.

large organisations like woolies, maccas, target etc. generally prefer to employ younger people as casuals (eg christmas casuals) because they`re cheaper to employ than older employees. coming up to christmas, heaps of places will be looking for christmas casuals as well so you shouldn`t have too much trouble finding something.

as an aside, this is just my two cents from working in retail thru high school and uni….retail sucks. working in in retail pretty much completely ruins christmas for you because everyone is just such a jerk to you (more so than usual).

my advice would be, if you can, try to avoid any shop that prides itself on having “”lowest prices”” and such, they tend to attract the most horribly rude, awful, stingy customers. i`m currently working at a shop like that (probably shouldn`t list it by name) and i have been called all sorts of insults like “”pathetic””, “”bitch”” etc. over arguements over something like 5 cents (i`m not joking, last week a customer literally called me pathetic because he complained that the shelf price was 5 cents lower and when i checked it, it wasn`t and on principle i refused to override the price for him – normally i would but this guy was just being a massive a-hole. then he said i was being ridiculous when i tried to give him 5 cents out of my own pocket just to get him to leave).

my view is probably a little bias, i mean i think i`m really not made for retail (i know some people love it) and i am absolutely sick to death of it. i literally cannot wait to quit my current job. i think it`s not so bad if you work in a smaller business where your boss will probably at least know your name (mine doesn`t, she just calls me “”mate””, even when i`m wearing my name tag…arrghh!! so rude!!) and they`re not so obsessed with meeting sales budgets or whatever. last week we sat thru some boring meeting about our $35 million sales budget for the year and were then lectured about how grateful we should be that they provided pizza for dinner…grrr!!! i should probably also mention that i work on the returns desk which is generally where you seem to cop more abuse than just on a normal check out. i didn`t hate my job anywhere near as much as i do now when i was just working on a normal checkout.

anyway, that`s the end of my rant…..good luck finding a job!

You never know, you might get the job beauty_muskin =)
Places like macca`s (most fast food chains), “”snazzy”” little businesses like clothing chains, craft stores, book shops are a great place to find jobs also. I know heaps of people who applied at Borders and got in straight away. It just requires you to know the store well and know how to operate at a checkout 🙂

I`m 14 and a half but in year 9 and i recently got a job. One is at a shop that sells candles, photo frames, soap, etc. a gift shop. I`ve also just been offered a place at Bakers Delight and am starting `training` next week after exams 🙂

It`s very easy. Basically you just hand in your resume to every shop you see. It shouldnt be long, 1 page. If you have done babysitting, community work, etc. Then put that on your resume too. Include your school achievements, hobbies, etc. etc. Then write your contact details at the top.

I printed out about 10 copies and walked around my neighbourhood asking the shop owners if they were hiring. If not, they usually take your resume anyway. And they`ll call you if they want to hire you.

Apparently Coles and Woolies have the best pay but its pretty tiring, apparently.

Alternatively, you can also earn money washing cars, babysitting, etc. I am also tutoring piano to a couple of little kids.

I heard that if you apply for jobs like in David Jones and Myer, they might accept you because at this age (im 14 and about 7 months, nearly!) your wages are the bare minimum so they`d be quite dumb to refuse you! If you get rejeted , its all good because the experience helps you prepare for other interviews, etc 🙂
Has anyone else heard of 14-17 year-old people working in myer/dj`s ? (not as SA`s, but doing other jobs in the department stores)
Id like to get a job in priceline 🙂 or any pharmacy lol
