hi guys, hair loss is linked to lots and lots of things when it comes to pregnancy and giving birth if i remember rightly, what happens is our bodies dramatically reduce the amount of testosterone they make in order to maintain a healthy pregnancy, when you give birth you get a whole flood of hormones including testosterone which causes hairloss, the influx of hormones usually takes 4-6 months after it happens to show in your hair and skin and can continue for a long time. so it seems like its not related to birth.

usually any changes in your body take around the same amount of time to show in hair, the most likely culprits of hair loss are giving birth, hormonal changes (perhaps have your doctor check your hormone levels ar normal). stress, iron levels, and medication changes. if you have just started to loose hair try to think back 6 months or so and remember if anything changed in your life around that time and you may find the cause.

the other thing to remember is that a certain amount of hairloss daily is normal, our hair goes though 3 cylces in a normal growth pattern, the first is the growing phase, which is exactly as it sounds, the 2nd is a resting phase where the growth stops for a while, and the third is a shedding phase, where you loose the hair, normally all your hair should be doing this at different times, therefore you dont loose it all at once. but perhaps you may have more hair going through the shedding phase than normal.

but as a starting point if its really bothering anyone have your hormone levels and iron levels checked. then if it continues and its really bothering you, you can see a trichologist who will analyse your hair in order to work out the problem.

Ooh that phases stuff is very interesting, thanks Michelle!

I`m wondering if my hair is in a shedding phase right now, as for blocks of a few months at a time, I tend to lose a looot of hair. My grandma always would say when the trees lost their leaves, my hair would start falling… sigh

I always shed a lot but luckily I have lots of hair, even if it`s really fine. There are always hairs on my pillow and I`m really good at clogging the shower drain ;D That said it`s not something that is actually noticable, I don`t have bald patches or anything. I do have extremely low iron levels at the moment but it doesn`t seem to be any worse than before. I know I have to improve my diet and I want to start taking silica too.

ive mentioned this in a diff hair loss thread somewhere but i lost heaps of hair due to extremly low iron levels so you should get that checked too. I used to have to clean my brush about 3times just to get brush my hair in the morns cos it got really fine and tangly to, it would nearly matt when i washed it. One hairdressers i went nearly freaked when she was brushing out my hair after washing it out cos so much was coming out.

Have you tried natural hair colours? Plenty out there but depends on your colour choice, they are very limited. It`s the chemicals in the hair colours that`s destroying your hair. Also your diet has a big impact on your hair too, more protein!

    Hi Brisblonde,

nope i didn`t/don`t have aelopecia (sp?), my GP just said that i had high stress levels, but after having my period my body feels like its back to normal, and i can see a new sheen look in my hair already. I just cant wait till my fringe grows back lol im kinda getting sick of the kramer look LOL! =D
Having take the Tablets helped as well, but i must admit that im still taking them due to an abcsess in my left breast….had it during my 2nd pregnancy and been operated twice and awaiting another surgery in 3months ARGH!

I had experienced ALOT of hair fall due to high stress levels, my hormones got out of whack, i started having Hot flushes throughout the whole day, my period was outta whack and just recently I had my period after 3months of the hot flushes and bad mood swings! RAWR!

My hair was a total MESS! and i ended up with a nasty fringe that looked like Kramers (from Seinfeld) LOL!
My GP advised me to take Evening Primrose Oil tablets 4x a day with food… ever since I had my period and had taken the tabz, I can see my hair is starting to get back to its normal state… as for the Kramer fringe…well… I`ll keep you up to date on that… its still growing and is getting back to normal…..VERY SLOW….LY! xD
