Do I need a powder to ‘set’ my foundation?

Hi Beauties!

I’ve always stayed away from powder foundations typically, as I have dry skin that is prone to a bit of flakiness and uneven texture and powder usually emphasises this! I also have freckles and some redness and like that liquid foundations seem to offer fuller coverage.

My question is, i’ve been using various liquid foundations for years and always find they end up going patchy and weird after a while, would using a powder over my liquid help with this? If so, do you have any suggestions?

Thanks ladies!

It really depends on the foundation you’re using. If its oil based instead of water based, definitely yes! Also if it’s really humid out use one too. Powder shouldn’t dry out your skin if its applied over foundation, it should be used to set it, not as extra foundation, so use a light hand!

In most cases, if the foundation has a dewy finish it needs a powder, if it’s a matte finish, it probably doesn’t.

If you have dry skin, use a good moisturiser and a liquid foundation that is a moisturising formula.

I agree that the ready set powder leaves your skin looking soft and supple – but when I look at my face in the mirror of my car (which IMO shows everything there is and is pretty good to see how others see your face) I realise how much it makes my face look funny. Not so much cakey but its obvious that there is some sort of powder on my face.
As for a brush, I’ve been starting to use a stippling brush so as to not add too much powder on my face.

I have dry skin but use zinc sunscreen which can be incredibly heavy and shiny looking esp in summer but when I use powder, it feels like I’m not wearing anything 🙂 I use Nude by Nature Mineral Finishing Veil

I always use a powder over my liquid foundation. I sewat a lot on my face so I need all the help I can to try and keep my makeup on. It also just completes my whole look. It depends what your needs are, whether you decide to use powder over top or not.

Sometimes powder accentuates pores and scars and dryness so make sure you moisturise and prime beforehand ! 🙂
I have oily skin but its dry on the surface (it goes from dry to oily in literally 30 minutes, crazy!). I use Australis makeup Finishing spary to hydrate the surface after my finishing powder, foundation or mineral powder. I use a fan to dry or a brush to pat it on- i find it helps with the dryness issue 🙂
Also, the recs for the Australis ready set go powder, the palladio rice powder and more are great because theyre all trusted and loved products and if you’re not sure go and search up some reviews 🙂

I’ve recently suffered an allergic reaction on my face and i had dry patches all around my face. When i applied powder over foundation it would make the dry patches even more obvious. What i did was i only applied powder to areas i dont have dry patches. It is good to exfoliate your skin before applying your foundation, to moisturise very well and prime 🙂

Yes you need powder – If you want your foundation to feel non-greasy and to last all day then you have to set it with a powder. I use MAC Mineralise Skinfinish Natural. But they also have a white setting powder which is good also. Also a good brush is something like Napoleons blush brush it’s not so dense so it does a good job without making it too heavy

Am sadly yet to find my hg foundation lol 🙁 So i’m still cycling between random stuff, currently using Maybelline Superstay, Illamasqua rich liquid foundation, Rimmel match perfection gel foundation and I got some samples of napoleon sheer genius liquid foundation which im loving, may have to purchase that next 🙂 Think i’ll definitely be hitting up kmart to buy the Australis powder!

What sort of brush do you ladies use to apply the Australis powder? I was actually thinking of buying this tommorrow before I even saw this thread and I wanted to get a new brush as well. I’m pretty sure kmart has $4 off australis atm too.

Foundation going patchy may actually be accentuated by powder. I have dry skin and sometimes the powder makes dry spots drier. I think what you need is a good (but gentle) exfoliant to get rid of all the flakiness and patches. Plus lots of moisturiser before foundation helps.

As for powder, it definitely helps set the foundation and smoothes the finish 🙂 And keeps the face looking fresher for longer 🙂
Australis one is a great rec! I use Palladio Rice powder over foundation, awesome stuff! Nude By Nature has a great finishing powder.

Just curious, what foundation do you use? Also if you use a sponge or something like Beauty Blender, it gives a better finish 🙂
