Different Foundation Finishes

So I’m in the market for a new foundation… not that I don’t like my old standbys (Revlon Colorstay), but I feel like I want to try something different and I already have some brands in mind.

But! As I shop around online for reviews I see things like “matte” and “dewy” and “satin” finish and while I thought I knew what these meant, it turns out I have NO CLUE because looking online there are a hundred different definitions of that these finishes mean and look like!

Can anyone help clarify what the differences are between the three finishes? Thanks in advance!

in my opinion, dewy skin is more summery when you want a lighter coverage. i have talked to numerous makeup artists who only reccommend this to clear skin, or reasonably blemish free skin as the dewy sheen only emphasises blemishes, etc.
i like matte for winter a little heavier and great coverage, you can always apply highlighter and bronzer to get a glowy apppearance.
satin is between matte and dewy, its fresh and sort of natural looking.
dont quote me here but i think matte is best for combination to oily skin if you like flawless heavier coverages while if youre young and want a natural look without much coverage (or natural look) go for dewy.
i also think powder gives a matte finish while if you use liquid it tends to be easier to get the dewy and satin finishes.
    good luck 🙂

I agree I think matte is better for oilier skin! I have dry skin, used a matte foundation once. I think i was comparable to the simpsons desert in Out back AUS:(

thanks that actually helped me ive always gone for a matte finish because mt skin has always been a bit oily but now that im a bit older than my 20s my skin has started to get really dry so i wasnt sure what i need so now im on the look out for a nice dewy finish. so if anyone can recamend something that would be great thanks again.

    Thanks for that, Beauty!

In that case would a satin finish foundation be suitable for someone with combination to oily skin? Or should I just stick with matte finishes? I do use a pretty good oil-controlling primer under my makeup.

    In my opinion

a matte finish is the finish that most people with oily skin people would prefer because it does not contain any shine and it helps with oil control

dewy finish is like a radiant and “glowing” finish where the face may look highlighted and very soft where as matte is more harsh! Dewy is more for people with dry skin

Satin finish is like a silky finish and its nor matte nor dewy!

    Hope that helps:)
