Cyclone Yasi

Queensland coast are you prepared for one majorly massive cyclone? I live in Ingham and it is chaos here, people are going crazy in supermarkets, petrol stations, pharmacies. Tomorrow is going to be worse and then Wednesday is D-Day! I can’t sleep, no one can sleep, this is so scary. Everyone is texting and calling each other prepared for the worst. All phones received a message with that crazy cyclone siren and it was a real reality shock. No matter where Yasi hits the width of this thing is just massive and it’s already a category 4. Good luck North Queenslanders, stay safe and I hope we all get a chance to chat again on BH.

YAY I finally have power, so so glad to be back, will have heaps of catching up to do, so much seems to have happened in just less than a week. Seeing so many new members I don’t know where to start, maybe Welcome would be the best 🙂
Anyway I was so worried about Gofton and SuperSarah when I logged on the other day and didn’t see posts from either of you. I had a good feeling about the Tableland being ok, many people from here flew up to the Tableland to get to higher ground and out of the grunt of it all. Gofton, phew heard that the Ingham area was experiencing heaps of flooding and stuff so was constantly thinking of you as well. You know I came within a whisker of taking off to Ingham on Tuesday night becasue they had an evacuation centre that took dogs. I ended up leaving the descision too late, which as it turned out was for the best, if we went down there we would have only just been able to get home, so I am sure I would have been stressing out big time. I did the best thing in the end for my kids and that was shack up in the local evacuation centre, I felt really safe there and well informed as to what was going on. This was by far the biggest cyclone for me in terms of the length, we were getting bashed with high speed winds for over 15 hours straight, that was the time that they had us on shut down inside the evac centre, whereas Cyclone Larry which was the one that ripped my house apart and caused me to lose everything was all over and done with in just four hours. That one was fast and extremely powerful. This Yazi was massive though and I wouldn’t wish that experience or the fear that it puts you through on anyone. So so glad that once again due to our knowlege and preparations for cyclones here in North Qld that nobody was killed. It definitely had the potential to destroy!!! Anyway will probably fill you all in on some more of my experiences after I have caught up a bit, it has been a full on week here and I have certainly had my fair share of dramas to go with it, lol. Thanks for thinking of everyone effected beauties, your support is so so appreciated 🙂

I am so relieved that everyone seems to be ok.

Emerald – I also cant believe how far reaching the rain is. We saw the flooding in Vic on the news and my husband said it was from Yasi and i thought he was bullshitting me…I mean, wasn;t Yasi meant to be in far north qld?? Its absolutely incredible.

So great to hear that you are okay too Gofton.
I cannot believe how large that cyclone was, the rains that went with it did an arc from the NT to SE Victoria last night and we are supposed to get some more tonight.
I don’t think I have ever seen my streets flood before (we have only had blocked drains and a bit of water hanging round the drains previously but nothing like this), I was shocked when I was driving home yesterday and came into my suburb to find this:

Hi Gofton, it is so good to hear from you. It must be very hard for you at the moment, hopefully you will have some utilities soon. Big hugs to you, hubby and your girls. xx Good luck to you and your community as you recover from this.

Hey everyone, I have just made connection. I am so touched that you had me in your thoughts and prayers. I know I was praying that we’d make it out alive. We have the generator going and I was so anxious to get on and let you all know that my family and I are safe. I have never been so petrified in my life – the fierce winds, the rain it was incredible. My town is 30 minutes from Cardwell which really copped it badly and not to mention Tully, just terrible. I never slept on Wednesday night, the night Yasi destroyed our towns. I never want to experience that again. The bathroom was our safe place, the two girls slept in the tub and I have to thank my i-phone for keeping my 6 year old sane, the music I downloaded that day was a life saver. My four year old slept through the whole lot of noise! Debris was flying everywhere and by morning the town looked like a war zone. The army came in today and helped the locals clean up heaps of mess. About seven houses in my town lost their roofs and walls and nearly every tree was uprooted. Our local butcher gave out over $20,000 dollars worth of meat as his generator stopped working and they couldn’t get another one from anywhere, it was heartbreaking but very generous on their behalf. Our water just came on also, which is amazing seeing as the damage was only 4 days ago. Don’t know when power will actually come on though. I am surrounded by flood water, which happened Thursday morning not long after the cyclone came through. It will probably stay up for another 4 days. I am so thankful my husband was prepared – water, fuel, generator ( he even lent out three more generators to people down our street), boat – he had it all covered. Many people were not prepared, they did not expect this to happen at all. Now I know what it was llike many years ago when people had to fetch water, flush toilets with buckets of water, use buckets of water to bath in. And not to mention how to cook meat without a BBQ. We had to borrow that. I have a list of things to get when I can go shopping again so I am ready for another cyclone or flood, which is predicted. I’m so happy you are okay Mel, I thought about you every day. Supersarah, where do you live? I was also wondering if other beauties went through this also – I hope you are okay.
