Changing shampoo and conditioner

Hi,
I have heard it’s good to alternate your shampoo and conditioner but does anyone have an opinion on how often? Is it best to change each time you wash your hair or is it best to use 1 product for several days/weeks/months and then change to another after a certain amount of time? What gives best results? Thanks

I tend to change products every time a finish one. Then just cycle through a couple of brands I like > Garnier Fructis, John Frieda Brunette, Herbal Essence, Redken. I recently started using Redken after recommendations from my hairdresser and I really love it. It is a bit more expensive but you use less product (the size of the lid for shampoo, half the size of the lid for conditioner) so it lasts awhile. I actually just finished it and off to repurchase and use again.

I was using TIGI Bedhead Urban Antidotes (No. 3) for about a year until it ran out…I bought No. 2 (same range) as my hair improved a lot over that year, so I thought I could drop down a damage level…now my hair feels dry and crunchy 🙁

Before reading this thread i was thinking that changing shampoos often increases hairfall,….in the past year i have used about 4 different shampoo in my pursuit to find the best for me

Oh wow, I haven’t heard of this before reading this thread.
I haven’t had this problem but I must keep this in mind!

Everyone’s hair will be different. But from reading articles the general guide is 3-6 months.
Some people need to change every 8 weeks others 6 months or even years.
Personally my hair starts to build up product and not feel as nice if I have been using a shampoo for more than 2 months. So I like to put that back into the cupboard and try a new shampoo. Even if I don’t finish the first shampoo and conditioner I can always go back to it.
But remember, just because your shampoo doesn’t give great results doesn’t mean the conditioner isn’t, or vice versa. You don’t need to use the same brand shampoo and conditioner. Switch it up!!

I have 3 different shampoos and conditioners in my shower and I use a different one each time I wash my hair but I wasn’t sure if this was a bad thing to do and if I needed to wait until I finish a bottle to then use a different one. Going by everyones responses I guess it’s what works best for each persons hair. I guess I’m still trying to figure out what is best for my hair. Thanks for all your opinions.

I always have two shampoos in the shower at once and alternate depending on which one I happen to pick up. But when I finish one I move onto another completely different shampoo therefore I have 3+ different shampoos in storage. If I use only one for an extended period of time my hair goes limp, lifeless and goes greasy very fast.

Yep agree with the others, if you use a lot of styling products then you need to use either a clarifying shampoo once a week or so or an apple cider vinegar rinse, which is also very effective, to remove all of the buildup. It doesn’t matter what brands you use, nothing will be very effective if you have a stack of buildup in your hair. Oh and not only styling products cause buildup, certain conditioners (ie pantene) coat the shaft in a film that will stay there and continue building up. Hence the importance of the clarifying shampoo 🙂

I like to use clarifying shampoo on sunday + monday because on on the w.e I have so much product in my hair and I just want to get all the gunk out! the rest of the days I use hydrating shampoo + cond 🙂
