Blushes and Brushes

Okay I’ve looked through several threads and articles that were here on the forums and while they’ve all yielded helpful information, I’m still somewhat confused by these particular products.

I use a bronzer (MAC Bronzing Powder in bronze) for a contour but I’ve also seen that bronzers can be used as blushes, and I think is where I get confused. I have a medium skin tone (NW35 is my MAC colour if that helps) and I’ve been struggling to find the right shade of blush that suits me. I know the basic rules about the colors that are meant to suit it and it looks like bronzers have good colors for it because I’m very tan.

People at various counters have also recommended using bronzers as blush for me.

I guess my question is… if I’m using a bronzer to contour, how different should the bronzer I’m using as my blush be? Should I avoid a bronzer all together and try to find a “proper” blush that is rosier? Are there any colours or brands that you know of that might do the trick? I’m on a bit of a tight budget at the moment so pharmacy brands are just fine.

And how important is the brush I’m using for contouring and for blushing? Can I just use a smaller powder brush or should I invest in a proper blush/contour brush?

Thanks in advance!

I use either a kabuki brush or an angled blush brush, depending on what look I’m going for. I use brown shades for bronzing and pink for blush.

I like to match the tone of my blush to the kind of lip i’m wearing (unless its a red lip, then i usually go pretty bare on the rest of my face) i contour will my bronzer, then apply blush to the apples of my cheeks (without smiling! smiling raises the cheeks so the blush ends up lower on the face which is ageing) and gently blend back along my cheekbones then finish with a highlighter.

I’m with DG, if you like to contour then keep doing it but use a lighter shade of bronzer more as a highlighter than a blush. To me blush is more pink or peachy tones so you could also try a peach or apricot shade of blush if you are quite tan.

I like the idea of using a shimmer bronzer as a blush, I may look into that.

I picked up a coral-colored blush (by Rimmel) and tried it alongside my usual contour, and it actually worked quite well, I was surprised! I was expecting it to poke out and be very very pink but it wasn’t!

I did also try to use the bronzer as a blush and not a contour, and it could be all in my head but I thought it made my face look rounder than I was used to. My cheekbones are high but they’re not very pronounced, so I quite like the contour adding a bit of emphasis.

Cheers for the tip on the Loreal Glam, I might see if I can pop into a store for a bit of a test-run. 🙂

Very confusing lol. Are you using a matte bronzer for contouring? If so, a lighter (just a shade lighter) bronzer with shimmer for cheeks would be well blending, highlighting while having a bit of a contrast.

I am NW 35- 40 too. When I use a bronzer, pink blushes never match. I think peachy/coral blushes with bronzer shades go well.

As for brushes, I have Eco tools too and love it! it is dense and flat, gives more control 🙂

Edit: I have this one and it works great for contouring and highlighting 🙂 Loreal Glam Bronze

oh also i have tanned skin too. i dont like bronzers of if i use it, only very lightly because i have high cheek bones, instead i go for pink toned blushes rather than red tones 🙂

are angled blush brushes better than flat ones?

Thanks for the feedback ladies… I may go a day or two without contouring and just blush with the bronzer and see how it looks, but I do like the idea of just a warm rosy colour on the apples of my cheeks.

Funny enough I do have the Eco Tools brush set (just got it last week) so looks like the big brush will have a lot more work to do! 😀

And thanks heaps for the video, very handy!

Maybe you could blush with your bronzer and just not contour at all. Maybe that would be all you need.

Have you tried MAC’s mineralize blush in warm soul?
I range anywhere from NW20 to NW35 at MAC depending on the time of year. I find anything that is a golden pink works best for me when i’m at my darkest.
