Advice on the best bed/mattress please!
Hi beauties,
I just had a very confusing day searching for a new bed/mattress, with some very unhelpful sales assistants. Then after I got home I did some research on the web, and there seems to be lots of conflicting opinions on latex beds and comfort layers etc. Some people find them comfy, but have now read a lot about how they become saggy very quickly, and that within a year they will indent to your body shape. And can make some people so boiling hot they can’t sleep on them 🙁
Also looked at Sealy mattresses at Forty Winks at first and they seemed good, but had the rudest sales person ever so I left! Then saw King Koil at Harvey Norman which apparently are made and endorsed by the International Chiropractors Association. But when I looked into this, it seems as though these sort of endorsements can be bought?!
Ahh, it’s very confusing, and was wondering whether I could ask you beauties for your expert guidance 😉 Firstly, whether you have new mattresses with mattress toppers with latex and whether you find them hot and do they start to sink in? What brand mattress do you love? And where did you buy yours from?
Thank you all so, so much!! xx

As some of you know, I have recently moved home and one of the things that I needed to get new again was a mattress. This is something you just can’t test out in a few minutes in the store so I asked many people, even while I had temporary accommodation and finally ended up getting a Koala mattress. I give this 5 stars. I have back and neck injuries and after sleeping on this mattress I don’t wake up in such severe pain. I also purchased the pillow, again highly recommended as it also fits my head and provides support. Today is the last day of their eofy sale and you will have to wait. I also ordered the sofa bed for when my family visits. That is how impressed I am with this product.
Some of you already know me and will know that this is not SPAM. Just a true recommendation of a product that I have found very good for me. Also, enjoying my new home, though no NBN and very slow internet.

I’m sorry I don’t have any advice…a new mattress is on our to buy list as we currently have a double mattress on a queen bed, however the mattress is still good so there are always more important things to spend our money on.
I just thought I’d share this with you…I personally haven’t tried it but it sounds so luxuarious!! I’m reading a Marian Keyes book and one of the charaters sleep with 2 doonas – she has one that she uses as a mattress liner that goes under the fitted sheets then one on top like normal…according to the character its like sleeping on a cloud! Sounds divine but to be honest dont see it ever happening!!
Thanks anyway Beautystar, sorry I think I missed you when I read the replies this morning! I actually have all the Marian Keyes books and know what you’re talking about 🙂 It does sound amazing! Definitely something that would be so lovely and snuggly in winter!

Hi Kj! Sorry if I’m throwing a red herring in here, but I’d actually recommend a mattress made from memory foam. I’m saying this because I have always suffered from back pain, and noticed a dramatic improvement after I swapped from inner-spring to foam. The idea is that the foam moulds to your body shape, and doesn’t exert any counter pressure, thus allowing your spine to rest in natural alignment.
Definitely not a red herring, very helpful cat lover! I really wanted to know what people have bought and liked, it’s so hard to believe a sales person motivated by commission 🙁 Especially as they all tell you different things! Would much rather listen to the experiences of fellow BHers 🙂

My mum has the latex and I find it quite uncomfortable to sit on at first but then you start to sink in. But I prefer the normal mattresses!
I own a Crown Posture Bedding Mattress from Forty Winks and it’s got a marshmallow like overlay on top. It’s one of the luxury ones and quite expensive but I have to tell you it’s the most comforable bed I’ve ever slept in. My sister also has the same one and she absolutely loves it. Good luck!

Thanks blackmagic! I saw that brand there, but was driven out of Forty Winks by the rudest sales person I have ever dealt with, grr. May have to go to another branch I think 🙂 I don’t think I saw the Posture Bedding one on their site, but they may have it instore, or hopefully can tell me which one is like it. Thanks for all your help beauties!!

This is such a difficult task, buying a new bed. I have a couple of friends who have latex mattresses and absolutely love them. The key is to buy the best one which has a pillow top on it.
I have been told that a good mattress should last at least 10 years. I bought my base and mattress over 10 years ago from Beck’s Bedding in Armadale, Victoria. They make everything themselves and the mattress is still great. For extra comfort I bought a mattress topper made from microfibre rather than down and it is lovely.
Beck’s Bedding makes latex mattresses with a pillow top made from bamboo which is an excellent fibre that keeps you cool and comfortable. I have some bamboo sheets which I think are the best.
I don’t think you can go wrong with Sealy as it is an excellent brand. I wouldn’t take much notice of endorsements by Chiropractors or other professional groups. The only way you can tell if a mattress suits you is by lying on it for some time in different positions. Don’t try it for 5 minutes – I suggest at least 15.
I guess I was impressed by Beck’s Bedding and will go back to them when I need a new mattress. A friend of mine has bought beds from them all her life. Not sure if their beds are available in other states. You can always call them.
Another company that makes their own beds is called Dux, which are meant to be great. There is a shop in South Yarra, Victoria but am sure they have shops elsewhere. Have not tried myself.
Good luck!
Thanks Roxymisha, that was extremely helpful! I know it’s not a beauty topic, but we all need our beauty sleep, right?! I’m actually in Melbourne too so might have to check out Beck’s Bedding, they sound great 🙂
So glad you are based in Melbourne. Do try Beck’s Bedding. I have no vested interest but just wanted to share my experience (and that of my friend’s) with you. No hard sell there and they do know what they are talking about. Happy bed hunting for the ultimate beauty sleep! x
