A Little Suggestion

Okay so I don’t know if the BH team is down with taking suggestions for the site, but I did have one that I really did want to make.

On sites like Sephora.com and Makeupalley.com, a quick profile appears under a user’s name when they write a review. They say things like skin tone, skin type, hair color, and eye color.

Looking at the BH forum and review pages, is it feasible to set up something like that? I mean, the space on the page is there and I know storing and recalling that information over and over again can be taxing on a server, but it would REALLY add to BH’s reviews and users to have some context when a product is being reviewed!

Sure we can write into the review that we have combination skin so THAT cleanser didn’t work for us, hence we give it 3 stars (or something like that), but maybe if we have that appearing beside every review we wrote it could be helpful?

That way when a 1- or 2-star review appears on a product page users have more information around why that review was written.

Just thought I’d throw that out there. Does this seem like a good idea to anyone else?

The basic stuff did used to show on the reviews before things got revamped didn’t it? I’m sure it did because when I’d read through reviews I’d check the person’s skin, hair etc and if it didn’t match up to me then I wouldn’t even read that review, I’d just skim right through to the ones that matched me.

For example if Melmeko was reviewing hair products I’d read that review as her hair is similar to mine but if DeliciousGirl was reviewing the same product I’d skip over her review, no offence DG =D, because her hair is long and curly so what suits her wouldn’t suit me. I did find that extremely helpful.

LOL We can be twins hey??? haha 😉 Poor DG, not being blessed with our fine, limp, locks and instead bestowed with thick, luscious waves, yep she definitely must be our fraternal sister, LOL 😉

Hi, i think this is the right thread to post this.
Speaking of suggestions, i think i have a new one. I’ve been looking for a new face powder lately, and when i go to reviews, some products have 60+ reviews! I don’t really have the time to read every single one and so i find it hard to get an overall opinion of whether i should try it or not.
I have seen on another site that at the top next to the name of the product it has something like “20 out of 30 users would try this product again” and an overall rating based on the number of stars that product has been given.
Maybe something like that could be incorporated to the reviews, because sometimes the first few pages of reviews are all positive, but then if you keep going through them, they aren’t very positive at all. But as i’ve said i don’t have the time to click through 5-6 pages of reviews! I think this could make finding the right product abit easier.

At the top of the page on the product you are looking at you can see an overall star rating

Ohhh okay i’ve never actually seen that up there before otherwise i wouldn’t of said anything, great to know. well maybe when you click on a product brand name, and it comes up the whole list of different products and over on <– that side it says how many reviews, save to favourites, email etc. maybe next to the amount of reviews there could be that star rating. i spent over 2 hours looking for a good face powder, if i would’ve known the stars were up the top of the product’s itself page i would’ve just quickly looked there on each page, but maybe something like i just said could make it abit faster so you don’t have to individually click every product.

    Hi there,
I just checked this out as I was pretty sure we do have this function on the site and yes, it’s still there.
When you land on a page of reviews, at the bottom of the review it says Read full review of [product name] by [member name]. Click on this and you’ll see the full review but in the top, left hand corner it says View [member name] profile and this is where you can see the member’s skin and hair type etc.

Take a look and let me know your thoughts and in the meantime I’ll talk to the techie team about making these a bit easier to find as they’re exceptionally useful. x

    Hi Leanne, thanks for replying!

I did check it out and while yes it IS useful, I still do think it’s useful to have it on-hand and nearby. The reasons I have for this are below.

    1) On the REVIEWS pages. For some products you have about a bajillion reviews. Having to click through each one to see whether or not they have the same skintype/skintone/etc as yourself can get redious and be time-consuming. Now you can read someone’s review, find it useful, and THEN check to see how relevant they are to you as an individual, but I think a simple “summary” under their name in the left panel can help with some of that.

    2) On the FORUMS pages. Very often you have users recommended or suggesting things to other users because, well, this is a great community. The problem is that not everyone notes their own skintype (or sometimes a user will ask for someone’s skintype only not to get a response because you lose track of the thread after a few days’ absence). By that same token, running a search on the forums for a previously talked-about product or topic from some time ago is handy for information that’s stocked and kept, but if the user offering their information didn’t also include stuff about their skintype (for example), then that information has less value because the thread’s been inactive for a year and that user hasn’t come around in a little while. If the information is under our names (in brief) all the time, that might solve a few problems… but I do understand that this can potentially make forums look cluttered, but this can probably be solved with every user’s username being a clickable link to their profile.

These are just examples, of course, but I mean they don’t HAVE to be as detailed as the full member profile page. Just three or four items like this –

    Age: 13-18, 19-24, 25-30, 31-39, 40-50, 50+
    Skin: Combination/Oily/Normal/Dry, Medium/Fair/Dark/Pale/Tan, Sensitive/*blank*l
    Hair: Brown/Black/Blond/Red, Straight/Curly/Wavy/Other, Fine/Thick/Other

So for me, the profile would look like –

    Vivixenne
    *blue* 102 posts
    Age: 25-30
    Skin: Combination, Fair, Sensitive
    Hair: Black, Straight, Other

    Or something. 😛

Vivixenne, this is a fantastic idea & would make product research so much easier!

I also think a mini profile under your name esp in the reviews section would be good, without having to click through and see cos that can be a slow process, and I’m especially interested in seeing the reviews of people with sensitive skin but it would be good to just quickly see which reviews are applicable rather than clicking on each person and checking and etc.

Oh yeah, absolutely… this website is not a forum first and foremost, but the forum does help foster that community feel and it has information on products that BH doesn’t have listed yet (Too Faced and Moogoo are just two of the brands that I was introduced to on here through the forums).

This suggestion wouldn’t be too MUCH work I hope, but even a quick fix is to make our usernames on the forums AND review pages a direct link to our profile pages…. rather than -> .
