Ye Olde makeup brands – gone but not forgotten

Hi all,

I’ve been reminiscing about makeup brands I loved as a teenager. Some of our local chemists used to stock English brands such as Miners, Cyclax, Elizabeth Hartley, Mary Quant (I loved her box of makeup crayons), and of course, Yardley Pot O’ Gloss ( I had lips, cheeks, eyes…….’Grass Green’ and ‘Vibe Violet’ eye gloss haha. I also really liked Prue Acton, and I loved Helena Rubinstein – I had so many HR eyeshadows! And then there was Juvena (great eye pencils), and some of the major companies put out smaller collections e.g Revlon had the ‘Charlie’ makeup collection, and Max Factor had ‘Maxi’ and ‘Whipped Creme’. Does anyone else remember old favourites that have long gone?

I can just remember all the multi-use products back in the 90’s. Lips, cheeks, eyes – it did it all! What a look that was.

I loved the Yardley Pot O Gloss range, and the Mary Quant makeup.

I remember back in 1969 there was a Revlon (I think) moisturiser which had a name something to do with the moon which had a real glow. Honestly, I know it was the year man landed on the moon, but that glow made my face look as bright as the moon. What was I thinking!

I remember buying makeup from Coles Variety Store when I was in high school (1980s). The brand was Starlet.

Thanks Kassalee, that was a joke I remember going around when I was in school in the 70`s I think. Don`t think anyone has got it though

Hey Trackydacky I was in school in the 1970’s (yr 10 in 1976) and never heard that joke! Maybe it didn’t find its way to the country areas! I’m not even sure I knew the F word back then!

Kassalee, it may have been the late 70`s or very early 80`s that I heard the joke at school and was scratching my head trying to work out what it meant. I went to school in the suburbs of Perth and remember the rough kids telling the joke and had to ask one of them what it meant. I told my daughter (19) the joke a few weeks ago and she just had a blank stare, obviously not familiar with Helena or Max, lol.

Ooh I just thought of some other brands – Harriet Hubbard Ayer, and Leichner and Aziza.

My first makeup brand back in Europe was Oriflame – I really liked their nail polishes as a teen.

Cyclax products were awesome. I loved their lipsticks and might still have a couple….yup im serious. The most amazing shades and they are still good as new.
They had great eye shadows and blush shades also.

  • My first makeup brand was red earth! So much memory!! Also Bloom was one of my early brands too.

Then the first makeup brand I worked for was Pout!
