What’s your most unique makeup, fragrance, haircare or skincare find?

Has anyone ever found anything cool that you just can’t find in stores, whether it be a makeup item from overseas, a skincare product from a tiny market, or a fragrance someone gave you that you have never been able to find a replacement of?

For me, I recently got a beautiful moisturiser from a lady who makes them from the privacy of her home in the tiny town of Mullumbimby, Northern NSW. Its the most luxurious cream, sinks into my skin instantly, and smells divine like roses. The lady who makes it calls her cream “help yourself healing rose skin care cream” and it’s only $20 for a 50g jar. She uses macadamia oil and rosa demascena oil, aloe vera, calendula and vitamin E in her formula and it is heaven on my sensitive skin. I’m happy to give anyone the details for this cream if they wanna try it, I absolutely adore it!

Another weird and wonderful product I was given once is a rose perfume in a gel from Saudi Arabia, from a friend who grew up there. The product is called “A Touch of Silk Love” by “House of the UAE’s Promises”, and it comes in a deep red jar and when you push the top a little bit of gel comes out which you massage between your wrists or over your decolletage. It’s quite overpowering so only a tiny amount is needed. I think it came from a Saudi Arabian market or bazaar, made by Saudi women, but I can’t find any info about it online and it’s certainly not available for sale online either.

What are your unique products that are hard to find or perhaps only locally available to your town/ country? 🙂

not find, but grandma used to make powder from rice. you soak the rice and blend it before drying it in chunks.
they used it to cool down the body on a hot day, or just a great exfoliate

Wow that`s so clever cosmoslyn! It`s amazing the range of unique uses every day things can have. I think rice powder can also work great as a dry shampoo as it absorbs oils really well 🙂

Ohh that’s awesome Ebondy-Rose Vaughan 🙂 I love the reject shop….and macadamia oil! $2 is such a bargain!! I’ll have to go to my local one and see if they have it 😀

$2 bottle of macadamia oil from the reject shop!

My hair is so curly and messy and it makes it soft and keeps it in place without making it rock solid like hair spray!

If you go to those Asian makeup stores in Chinatown, you will see plenty of odd Japanese makeup products. The problem is that they are all in Japanese, i don’t understand a single word or how to use them!

jillian206 I actually discovered this really cool makeup brand called 3CE in an Asian makeup store, although I think it`s actually from Korea. And my first set of false lashes are from a Japanese equivalent of Crazy Clarks/ FDB`s (not Daiso, but similar to that store) and I couldn`t read the writing at all, but luckily I didn`t really need to for that product as it`s pretty self explanatory hehehe :p

Wow those Face Shop perfume tubes look lovely makeupcatxo 😀 I’ve never heard of them but I really wanna look those up now, the cherry blossom one looks delectable!! I usually find my weird and wonderful items from markets, just recently I got some comfrey ointment for my partner as he has a fractured metatarsal bone, and it’s taking forever to heal. Not sure if it will work but comfrey is known as “knitbone” and is said to speed up bone healing… I thought it’s worth a try although I have my doubts, plus I don’t think its that unique as they sell comfrey cream at chemists 😛

I was so intrigued the whole time while reading this haha. You are so lucky! They sound like such unique and beautiful items made with lots of love poured into them.

Love the sound of a ‘gel’ perfume. The only ones I’ve seen are by The Face Shop in little squeeze-tubes, but they’re definitely nowhere near as special as yours. Here’s a pic:

Can’t think of any unique/hard to find items I own. 🙁

I used to have a Vietnamese housemate and she gave me an asian version of berrocca because I was always lethargic. It was amazing so possibly illegal haha

They have some amazingly effective medications in Asia! I came down with an awful case of the flu in Bali. In Australia, I wouldn`t have even gone to my GP as I know their advice would have just been to rest. In Bali, the hotel`s doctor gave me 6 different tablets to take, and I was feeling great the next day. The same thing happened to a friend in Hong Hong. I don`t know what the tablets were, but I wish I`d been able to get more to bring home as they certainly worked magic!

That`s so true Chicklet, loads of doctors here would just say rest, and while rest is good sometimes you just need pain relief or congestion relief so you can sleep easily or go about your usual routine if you don`t have time to stop. The Balinese stop-cold tablet I took was a combination of 4 medications designed to open the airways, help the mucous slide away, and take away the pain. The main ingredient was pseuodoephedrine which is heavily regulated here, but it just works wonders at clearing a blocked nose! I know pseudo has to be regulated for important reasons, but the replacement phenylephrine just doesn`t work for me and is a waste of money. If I ever go to Bali and get sick I`ll be looking for Stop-Cold! 😛

Haha that sounds amazing! 😀 That actually reminds me of when my dad gave me some “”stop cold”” from Bali, it actually was amazing at clearing my head but it`s not available in Australia I don`t think

What a great thread, Emma. I’m not going to be any help to anyone as the most gorgeous fragrance I’ve ever had, bought for me by my darling Mum many years ago called “White Flowers” only seemed to have one life and then it was gone. Gorgeous bottle too!

I’m going to show my age here but I loved Cyclax (have I got the spelling correct?) Milk of Roses – been unavailable for years! Older beauties will almost certainly know what I’m talking about.

    • 6 yrs, 12 mths ago

Thanks Trish 🙂 the perfume your mum gave you sounds divine! I love floral fragrances 🙂 I can`t say I`ve heard of cyclax milk of roses though, but it`s always a shame when beautiful products are discontinued. There is an old fragrance called “”moon grass”” from the body mist brand Impulse, and I would love to smell it again for nostalgic reasons, but it sadly no longer exists.
