Trying it on – products in action

So there’s a flurry of product trialling activity going on presently. Rather than have photos taken up in other threads, I thought I’d create one here. I don’t recall seeing a similar thread (if there is one and I’ve created a double-up, I’m really sorry).

I’ve been hitting the Beautyheaven 10th birthday products recently, so I thought I’d post some action pics! It doesn’t have to be birthday action, but any particular product you’ve been trying, swatching, loving, hating, making you itch, cry, giggle, whatever. It’s not necessarily FOTD or EOTD, but hey, here’s a spot!

Mwah,

Thank you all. I really should wear red lipstick more often, but I find it a PITA to work with since you need to be so precise (and I’m generally not like that when it comes to lippy & especially lip liner).

    Love the colour Seashells

  • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Gorgeous colour! And you deserve to treat yourself!

    • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Thanks Rose. In all reality, I didn`t need it (I have/had enough lipsticks to begin with!), I just wanted it.

  • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Spectacular colour Seashells. Good on you for treating yourself.

    • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Well, it was for my birthday after all; but I needed another lipstick like a hole in the head tbh….and it`s not as if I can wear it right now anyway!

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Wear it for you. I wear makeup most days even if I`m at home and I`m unlikely to see anyone or go anywhere. It just makes me happy and more confident. Having a little play with my makeup – blending, experimenting, looking at the packaging, admiring the colour or scent – is creative and produces much needed joy and distraction. I ended up training as a makeup artist at 15 and then up skilling at 20 as a theatrical makeup artist while studying my psych degree. I used to paint as a kid, but realised despite my kind teachers that I had no real talent so I turned to makeup at 13 and never looked back. My face is my canvas and my makeup bag my art supplies. I reason that I would be probably spending more money on art materials. The best thing is that I can be a bad Banksy, wash it off and start again. Buddhists do sand art that gets blown away by the wind. It teaches them the impermanence of all things, that it is the doing, the journey to create beauty that matters, not that the end result is lasting or permanent. So anyone for a wash it off after a day art project? Go makeup! Seashells you have replenished your art supplies, you did need that new colour! I can tell by the care you take in drawing and painting your lips that it is self expression for you. You are a lip artist. Rejoice!

LOL @ lip artist Frenchy, I like that (although to me it feels more like “”try not to f*** it up; colour in between the lines””).

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

After going bare-faced for years, I now sometimes wear makeup at home as well even when I do not go out all day. Not even for work as I am not on camera on calls/vid calls (I refuse to actually). I do it purely for myself. It is something I picked up from a colleague – she puts on makeup in the middle of work to boost her confidence when she is stuck. I had a similar quirk pre-lockdown: putting on heels helped me focus. However, I am now separated from my shoe closet in the office where I have left most of my pumps. Now working from home, particularly when I am drafting legal submissions or reviewing/amending settlement contracts, I like to put on blush and lipstick when I am stuck. I liken it to war paint. It really helps me get in the zone!

I also caved recently and purchased the new Kosas mini lip oil set and Nars lip balm duo. I have a few of the Kosas powder blushes but never tried any of their lipstick/lip oil range. I wish I had bought the Kosas lipstick trio that was available a while ago. The Weightless range looks amazing!

Ethelinde I almost splashed out on one of the creme blush/highlighter duos (8th Muse) but erred on the side of caution as I`m still not sold on the highlighter in the duo. I`ve seen what I look like with it on – it`s not bad – but I fear that the highlighter might be a bit on the glittery side, which isn`t a look I`m going for. I might change my mind at some stage, but right now I can`t justify making the purchase.

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

I have 8th muse but not the latest intense version. There is not any obvious glitter in there that I can see and when blended out it can be fairly sheer. I was hesitant about the price for a long time but bought a few of them on a whim when they were on sale on Cult Beauty a while ago.

I HATE glitter (on me and unless I am having a Euphoria moment).

I relate. When tackling tasks like psychological reports from home on comes the makeup! Gives me confidence. I take a break to apply my lippy have a cup of tea and it`s like I refocus – lippy re application is like a message to my brain – now you imposter with the heart of an artist – boom – you`re a professional again. Those reports especially if related to compensation that had to have a particular factual template – oh yawn! A spritz of Chanel and its like this is what I`m working for get on with it!

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Interesting reading about the application of lipstick or make up giving you ladies confidence. I can`t relate as I don`t wear lipstick or make up but I read a really good book last year called Code Name Helene by Ariel Lawhon , it`s about Nancy Wake. Nancy is supposed to be parachuting into a dangerous area and doesn`t make the jump when she`s supposed to. The pilot and other agents aren`t happy so she applies her lipstick while the plane circles back and she likens it to applying a suit of armour, then makes the jump.

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Nancy Wake is a bloody legend, Trackydacky!

  • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Ok so naughty me went & bought the last Kosas Weightless Lip Colour I wanted (the shade Electra, a cool-toned bright red) because I had a “f*** it, why not?” moment & wanted to get my Beauty Loop gift (because I don’t know if I’m going to remain on Level 1 for much longer; my level expiry is mid next month & I’m about $50 something short).

I’m pleased to report that despite my fears of this leaning too warm for me on account of where I first tried it on (under warm flourescent lighting at Mecca), it actually doesn’t. It is truly cool-toned, hoorah! When I compare it with another red I have in my stash (Eye of Horus Bio Lipstick in Vesta Red), this is not only brighter but much more opaque in one swipe. Makes Vesta Red look like a tinted balm tbh.

This doesn’t feel too heavy compared with Royal, the berry shade I showed you guys last time. Feels a little more like Violet Fury (the fuchsia shade I also showed last time) in terms of weight on the lips….kinda odd when you think that it’s called Weightless yet 1 shade feels kinda heavy on the lips. Nevertheless, I’ll wear them all when I get a chance…but not at once.

I’ve just uploaded my review for Essano Vitamin C Brightening Skincare Kit,
    beautyheaven.com.au/skin-care/travel-gift-sets/product/vitamin-c-brightening-skincare-kit#1860055

It contains 40mL cleanser, 40mL scrub, 3mL serum, 10g moisturiser, plus a calico drawstring bag. After using the whole regimen, my complexion appears brighter, firmer & clearer. The serum was my favourite in the range, by far!

    In a nutshell:
    Cleanser ⭐⭐⭐⭐✩
This light orange gel has a mild scent of tropical fruit. It left my skin squeaky clean but not tight. At 54, I no longer like having squeaky clean skin. Otherwise, it’s an excellent cleanser.
    Scrub ⭐⭐⭐⭐✩
The same look, feel & scent as the cleanser. This also left my skin squeaky clean but not tight. The scrub particles are super fine. This gentle scrub is suitable for daily use on most skin types unless you dislike squeaky clean skin, as I do.
    Serum ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
HERO PRODUCT! It only takes a drop or two of this milky white serum for my whole face. DEFINITE REPURCHASE unless I can find an Aussie-made Vitamin C serum that doesn’t break me out – I’ve had no luck so far.
    Moisturiser ⭐⭐⭐⭐✩
With a low SPF of merely 15, I’ve only worn this while I’m at home. This lightweight white moisturiser has a mild, sweet scent & absorbs without a greasy feel. It feels too heavy on my skin: for about an hour after applying, my skin felt suffocated, as though coated in plastic wrap – but that’s the norm for me – my skin is freakishly intolerant of all but the lightest moisturisers. It would suit most other skin types.

Despite my minor complaints about the cleanser, scrub & moisturiser, as I stressed above, using the whole regimen noticeably improved my complexion.

I thought the vit c serum was amazing apart from the smell! What did you think misfortune8?

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

You didn`t like the smell, philippa? I found the scent extremely mild. I loved everything about the serum, but I wish I could find an Aussie-made one that didn`t break me out.

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

I`ve got the full size bottle and it has a really strong scent, it wears off quite quickly luckily!

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

        Really? That`s interesting, philippa.

I`ve got a small stash of serums to get through, but I can`t wait to get the full size! I love it!

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

I really like the results misfortune8, my skin texture is definitely more even so I will keep using it.

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Yes, I didn`t expect to see good results in such a short amount of time!

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Same misfortune8! Very impressed, especially for a lower priced brand

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

Talk about cheap – I bought it for half price at Priceline! Then, the next week I saw it for half price at either Woolies or Coles!

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

        Definitely worth stocking up misfortune8:)

    • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

I tried the other (non vit c) kit and it was Ok but a little drying. M8 did you have any irritation from any of these products?

      • 2 yrs, 7 mths ago

No, Frenchy – my tough old skin doesn`t react much. The only problem I usually have is zits. Vitamins C & E are both zit triggers for me. I`ve used a handful of Vitamin C serums & they all break me out, but this range left my skin looking amazing!

Lastly, we have another bareMinerals MINERALIST Hydra-Smoothing Lipstick shade, this time in Optimism, which is a strawberry pink. In the photos it looks very similar to the Kosås shade above, but in person I can assure you that there are some differences. Optimism is definitely more on the pink side of berry than Royal, also Royal has more depth to it.

Having now tried 2 of these MINERALIST lippies, I’ve gotta say I’m not a fan of the semi-matte formula. I already knew I couldn’t wear matte lipsticks due to having chronically dry lips, but these also make my lips feel like the Sahara once they’ve begun to wear off + the day after wearing them. I like both shades that I have, but won’t be buying any more. I really wish they were just a straight up cream instead because there’s some beautiful shades I’d love to buy (namely Creativity, which is a watermelon pink + Purpose, which is a cool cranberry), but the formula is just a no-go for me. That said, compared with the Kosås lippies, the bareMinerals ones feel lighter on the lip so if you can get along with a semi-matte, give them a go.

    • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

I`m a little obsessed with your foundation what is it and what colour? You have a similar skin shade/ tone to me. Only I`m much older. Care to share?

      • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

Ha, I`m actually not wearing foundation at all, I`m au naturel in all my photos! (Largely because I cba putting on foundation day-to-day, unless I`m going to an event or something special.) My phone camera blurs all the sins I`ve accumulated over my (almost) 37 years of life….

As far as foundations go, there`s only 2 products I`m using currently: bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel in Opal 01 (the lightest & pinkest shade) + COVER FX Natural Finish Oil Free Foundation in 120. I also have an Anastasia Beverly Hills foundation sample I need to try at some stage; maybe I`ll test it out during lockdown.

Big fan of the bareMinerals product – it`s great for day wear + can be layered if you want a bit more coverage – but not a fan of the COVER FX (which is no longer sold in Australia since they pulled out of Sephora worldwide – they`re now sold at Ulta in the US though). The COVER FX refuses to cover my combination & sensitive skin (especially on my oily nose where it slides around no matter what primer I use) + it makes me look ultra dewy. It`s much better for drier skins methinks. Props to them for the shade range though; I have found it difficult looking for a foundation that`s not only light enough for me but also has a pink undertone & suits all my other ingredient requirements etc. So many brands seem to think that people with a fair or porcelain skin tone are all either neutral or warm toned, when that simply isn`t the case. I`m keen to check out Rare Beauty (Selena Gomez`s beauty brand) once it`s in Sephora AU + I`m allowed to look at it in person as I`m keen to try their foundation but am unsure what shade I`d be.

      • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

Thanks S. I want to try the Bare Minerals in Opal. I have the BM Powder Foundation in Fair and stuck on my dependable Clinique Even Better shade 0.5 CN (VF} and NYX Total Control in Pale. Also use It Cosmetics Celebration Foundation Powder in 01 when my skin is oilier in summer. Just trying Mirenesse Velvet Max lift Airbrush Foundation in 1.1 Porcelain. I quite like it. You have fantastic skin. You may suit the shades I`m using.

    • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

      Love all three Seashells

  • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

Next up, another Kosås Weightless Lip Colour shade, this time in Royal, which is a cool-toned berry. This one is real stunning for the colder months IMO; it has a nice depth to it & the colour pops my eyes & hair colour, even without makeup on.

The only criticism I’ll give for these lippies is on first impression they do feel heavy on the lip, so if you’re not a fan of heavy feeling lipstick, then steer clear. They are real creamy though, so that could be why they feel heavy. Opacity is pretty good too, although Violet Fury is a little more sheer compared to Royal. Both shades are in my wheelhouse of colours, so I’m happy with my choice (I’d tried Royal before but had to take a punt on Violet Fury as its not in Mecca stores). As I mentioned in another thread, I’m kinda keen to get Electra (cool-neutral bright red) next, but I’d like to see what it looks like in natural light first as I fear it might pull more neutral on my skin.

    • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

I really love this with your skin tone!

    • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

      Yes, nice depth!

    • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

All lovely shades, but I particularly love the ‘Royal’. It’s so pretty. Definitely a shade I would happily wear.

I’ve never worn Kosas lippies, but I do own a Kosas liquid eyeshadow, and it’s fantastic. I’m pretty sure the shade is Element (warm chestnut).

    • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

Love all these 3 shades! My faves are always cool toned berry (anything purple tinged, plums etc) shades. Plus have deep pink that I adore. Your skin tone is way lighter than mine (and cool toned), so you can wear lighter pinks (that one Violet Fury is superb!). Formula looks creamy, I like that.

  • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

Ok dokies guys, I have some lip swatches for you!

(Literally just did these about 10-15 minutes ago; please excuse the uneven job around my lip lines!)

First up, we have Kosås Weightless Lip Colour in Violet Fury, which is a cool fuchsia pink shade and a very me shade to boot. I have a real thing for fuchsia pink lippies, it’s one of my favourite shades to wear.

    • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

This is my favourite on you!

      • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

Thanks Frenchy! Fuchsia pink is such a me colour when it comes to lipsticks. Love me a bright pink! (Would like to add the colour to my clothing collection too at some stage.)

    • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

This one is gorgeous, Seashells! God, I miss wearing lippy!

      • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

I miss having an excuse to wear lippy, or decent clothes. :o(

      • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

I wore my velvet snakeskin print skirt to go for a walk the other day. It occurred to me that if the cops stopped me, I`d have a hard time explaining that I was just going for a walk, haha!

      • 2 yrs, 8 mths ago

Cute lips Shells!! I can`t wait until everyone is free again.

  • 3 yrs, 4 mths ago

I’ve just reviewed Skin Republic Koala Hydrating Printed Face Mask Sheet with Hyaluronic Acid, here: https://www.beautyheaven.com.au/skin-care/face-masks/product/koala-hydrating-printed-face-mask-sheet-with-hyaluronic-acid#1842573
    [EDIT} Review is now published.

It’s hydrating, but not as much as other masks I’ve used. Like the kangaroo mask, its eyeholes were so big they left out my undereye area.

REPURCHASE? No, this is more of a novelty than serious hydration.

Pic: I placed the used mask on my bathroom wall to give an idea of what it looks like. This one actually looks like a koala.

    • 3 yrs, 4 mths ago

Cute mask but I see what you mean about the large eye holes.

      • 3 yrs, 4 mths ago

Yes, it comes well under my orbital bones. My undereye area is where I really need all the help I can get, so I prefer masks to be closer to my eyes.
