Hi jupiter, it's easy to miss some people's comments, especially on a long thread such as this one. I know that you were not ignoring me.
March skincare empties part 2
DHC Deep Cleansing Oil
This is a very popular product in Japan. It's a very effective cleansing oil that takes off stubborn make-up and sunscreen. You apply to dry skin and massage, then add water to emulsify, and surprisingly it's not oily once rinsed off. I usually still follow up with a gentle foaming cleanser. This works really well on waterproof make-up. It also helps with clogged pores as some of the gunk kinda gets massaged out. Those with oily skin need not fear as it doesn't leave your face greasy, and you can follow up with a gentle foam cleanser anyway. I'm now using another Korean brand but I think the DHC may be a bit thicker and easier to massage.
e.l.f. Antioxidant Booster Drops
This was a surprisingly nice water-based, fragrance-free serum. It comes in a tiny 15ml bottle but the ingredients list is impressive including niacinamide, ethyl ascorbic acid (Vit C), tocopheryl acetate (vit E), tremella fuciformis sporocarp (snow mushroom) extract, glycerin etc. It had a nice consistency and is hydrating. $22 for 15ml in Australia but elf website sometimes has 50% sitewide, which is when I bought it.
Manyo Factory Bifida Biome Complex Ampoule
I've already written about this in Dec 2020 empties. For me it was the most exciting skincare discovery of 2020. Contains probiotics from several ferments, 10 types of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptide, is fragrance-free. Wonderful hydrating product that strengthens the skin barrier without irritation. It has done wonders on my husband's dry sensitive skin and has evened out his skin tone. I shared this bottle with him.
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Retinoid Emulsion
This is the only TO retinoid product that isn't in squalane that I've repurchased several times. It is a milky emulsion that absorbs well and I prefer this format in the warmer months. It is safe for beginners to retinols as there is zero to low irritation even though it is categorised as moderate strength by The Ordinary.
I should have read your comment properly. I googled the Manyo and was surprised to see that it’s a bottle not an ampoule then reread your comment and saw “bottle”. You had me at exciting skincare discovery.
Oh yeah the terminology for Korean skincare is a bit confusing. There's essences, serums and 'ampoules' - the latter supposed to be packed with more active ingredients and usually packaged in a small dropper bottle. To me it just seems like a thicker serum.
Yeah ha ha I was really excited to find such an excellent product at a reasonable price - it's not exactly a dupe of the Estee Lauder advanced night repair but both have bifida ferment lysate high up on the ingredients list. This ingredient is also present in Lancome Genifique serum.
In case you're interested in trying it, Olive Young (one of the biggest pharmacies in South Korea) stocks Manyo and I think you can get free shipping for your first order if you're a new customer. Mine shipped via DHL.
Alternatively, Yesstyle also stocks it, ships from Hong Kong.
thanks jupiter for that extra info
My empties for April are as follows:
YSL Libre EDP - no. Smells old school heavy duty synthetic perfumey with that sweat undertone (Chanel classic undertone, cat urine like). MAy be from lavender with sweet undertones. So not my style.
Body Shop Hemp overnight mask - greasy, does not spread well. Needs to melt for a while on the skin before mushing it over and blend. Just pure oil. My skin does not need it. Scent herbal.
Hunter face scrub-not a scrub, but just a face wash. HAs a few granules of kind, but not exfoliating. Do not need it.
Becca champagne pop-makes skin texture pop and gets enhanced. Shade not flattering. Looks so weird. Feels like a cheap formulation.
Vanessa Megan Prebiotic exfoliator-new formula that I got to sample ...do not like as the old version. No. Not as scrubby and not as exfoliating. Feels also more coarse and not fine and luxe as the old formula.
Laneige water sleeping mask-useless.
YSL top secrets instant moisture glow-useless.
Dr Roebuck moisturizer-unsure what this does. Used up on neck/chest.
Clinique ID wrinkle and fatigue-Both huge dislike from me. I think that that base moisturizer (moisturizing lotion) must be the reason . It dehydrates top layer of my skin.
Syrene hydrating sheet mask- Interesting. Overpriced yes. It is just one use thing. Has a lot of serum in it. Smells nice refreshingly marine/salty. Leaves skin hydrated temporarily. Sheet is a very bad fit for my face. Flimsy too. After using Lululun (far superior in all aspects), and comparing the effects and price and fit and materials and eco friendliness....meh, Syrene: big thumbs down.
ALL No Ø
Thanks for your reviews Yoh, your honesty and bluntness makes me smile.
Well it is what it is. No worries Tracky
I felt the same about the Becca highlighter.
Well Omy, Becca will close down by the end of year I think they have said. Sad for many, as the brand used to be popular in the social media world. I think these brands/products just get overhyped due to the social media promotions and "influencer" push ads.
Some of the Becca range is actually pretty good. I own quite a few. Berlin Girl Glow highlighter is exceptional. Don't need an influencer to convince me to buy it. Pretty sad actually that they are shutting shop.
You know what is overhyped and very disappointing: Fenty Skin. Never again.
Yup, sad for sure! I have and looove (only "concealer" type of product I use and will use and is worth my effort and time) is Becca under eye brightening corrector in light. Like some of the other goodies too as they have skin friendly formulations. Just that overhyped highlighter shade/formula...no.
Agree with fenty skin.
I hear great things about the concealer but have never used it before. Otherwise agree about Champagne Pop shade and it has been marketed to death. I did like the Champagne Pop highlighter drops. It is really not a universally flattering shade though.
I didn't like the Syrene mask either. Pretty sure I had problems with the fit too, plus waaaaaay too much serum from memory.
Yup, was so much leftover of serum that I used it on my body.
Yohanna, I loved the original Vanessa Megan Prebiotic + C Skin Polishing Exfoliator. What has changed with the new formula? Have the ingredients and/or texture changed?
As I got it in the sachet I got 2 generous uses of the powder. And feel that this new formula was more granular/coarse. Old formula was so fine and polishing skin to glass looking effect. I was using it before going on either dates or special places to have extra smooth skin. This one didn't give me that effect! Not exfoliating as the old formula and I used it same way (wet, apply and scrub, leave on 5ish + minutes till face goes stiff, wet, scrub rinse. Skin from old formula was so polished. With new formula had no effect. Perhaps a bit of exfoliation?
Though since this powder came in a sachet, what if I just got a bad batch from the top of the mixed pile as they were packing (where only coarser granules were)? Do not know.
Maybe when people start reviewing the new formula of the powder, people might comment about the possible change in formula. So many companies reformulate their products and claim that they are improved, but this often is not the case.
Frank coffee body scrub-can make at home for way less and better. Did not mind it, but would never buy it. Was gifted. No Ø
NBN sheer liquid foundation - trial. natural based, went off so fast. Decluttering. Not for my skin anyways. Sits on top, I prefer ones that are my skin (but a bit better). No Ø
Sephora cream lip shine - gifted. Decluttering. Shade yuck (nude something). Formula seems nice. No Ø
CoverFX countour kit medium - GWP. Decluttering. Used lightest shade (N20, highlight pot) for blending into my skin as a "sheer" style foundation. Formulas of this stuff is good...but too heavy in coverage for me and too dark. No Ø
Palmers body butter vitE - not good. No scent, no hydration. No Ø
Reach dental floss - too wide for my teeth. No Ø
Shick shaver 5 blades - gifted. Bad quality. Not giving a smooth close shave as my titanium coated blades (made in Germany) shaver made "for men". Lasting power: bad too. After just couple of uses need tot change the cartridge. Gel part gives me itchy skin and a rash. No Ø
Sensori T. Carnival room smell neutralizer- have no use for this kind of products. Smell of herbs. Goes away fast. Spray used up super fast. If used daily, in a week or so. Overpriced. No Ø
Sensori Sapphire Coast night - beautiful bottle. But....will not reuse/repurpose it, the colour started to scratch off. It is sprayed on the glass, not looking luxe any more. Mist used up super fast. 2 weeks and not used daily and only couple of spritzes at a time. Nice smelling yes! Lavender, zesty. Overpriced for tiny amount. Lasting power of scent: bad. Lasts for 30 minutes or so...then goes away slowly. I think as it is supposed to be just a smell neutralizer. Again, have no purpose for these kind of products. No Ø
Thursday Plantation tea tree oil - good stuff. I use it for so many things. Staple in my house. Have a large bottle. This was travel one to take with me. Yes ✅
Isn't it a pity Thursday Plantation left Bh? I'm hoping they'll return one day!
Quite bizarre. Cult classic Aussie, excellent brand left BH...then some weird ones joined (suspicious ones that I shall not name)
I have their lavender oil, used a few other ones. Tea tree one saved my gums. I get sensitivity issues from all regular toothpastes....that from time to time I buy as I want to try and have that frothy feel and minty punch that I love. But always paying a price, always (they burn and ruin either pH or bacterial flora or...who knows what in my mouth). So have to come back to brushing with tea tree to heal. Love it.
That's interesting, Yoh! I've tried their tea tree, lavender & peppermint oils but not their toothpaste.
Me neither Misfortune, not the toothpaste. I use their tea tree oil itself. Couple of drops on my toothbrush. Voila. Superb.
Oh, OK, I misunderstood. & that works? Gee, what do you know!
For many years I have had severe allergic reaction to normal hair colour that contains ammonia and peroxide.
Upon receiving the item and taking it out of the parcel, the packaging elicited a tingle of excitement.
