Selfies and the rise of plastic surgery

By now we all know what a selfie is. Some of us even indulge in taking one every so often.
But here’s something you may not know about the selfie – it’s actually become a reason to seek plastic surgery.

According to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, young adults in the US are becoming so self aware thanks to the good ol’ selfie, that they’re looking to enhance their features to look better in their selfies.

So we want to know your thoughts on the matter – do you think that the selfie forces people to focus on the features they don’t love so much on themselves? Have you ever considered changing your beauty routine or tweaking certain things you do so that your selfie is its best?
What about the fact that people are seeking to have surgery to fix their (apparent) flaws? Has a selfie made you hyper-aware of any features you don’t love and has got you considering surgery?

Share your thoughts because we’d love to hear them!

I don’t take selfies. I would rather take a decent, memorable photo with a good camera when I want to not just for the sake of it with a selfie.

Very true blue rose even some YouTube video I have watched!! I can see them filming in front of their beds without even doing their bed ! You can still s the the mess at the bed at back!

One thing that often suprises me about selfies is how people don’t consider what is in the background of their picture. They get so obsessed about how they look they don’t consider the mess in the background!

I love my natural features and I don’t like improving any thing with plastic surgery for selfie or any other reason. I do believe that parents should guide their children to love themselves and their natural features. They don’t need any plastic features to enhance any thing.

I use selfies in a beauty context in a lot of before/after shots for my own purposes. It’s how I can monitor if my skin is getting better (yes) or worse (nope, just in my head). They also help me to figure out if certain products work like they say they will, like masks.

They’ve never, ever driven me to even think about surgery, though.

Ugh I never like having my photo taken and if I try taking a selfie the 100th picture might come out looking cute but the rest just look weird to me. Recently my sister upgraded her smartphone and I have noticed that the camera takes really good, clear pictures. I feel as tho theres a built in photoshop effect when you take a pic with her new phone. Sad state of affairs when the phone comes built in with photoshop. Its like the phone company telling you that you’re not good looking enough so we’re throwing in automatic photoshop right when you take your pic.

Never taken a selfie and up until now have never thought about it. I am one of those people that take a horrible photo and I tend to stay away from cameras. I don’t have a problem with anyone who does them but like anything else moderation is the key.

Who would have thought this topic would be so controversial so quickly?

I don’t think all people who post selfies are all self absorbed or have a big ego. I feel like that’s just passing judgment without even getting to know them or giving them the chance 🙁

I agree, to a certain extent.

I have started taking selfies recently, only because I’ve felt good in the moment & wanted to capture it. Granted, not all of them are great & I’m still learning what angles best suit my face & all that, but I don’t see the harm in it. I don’t see myself as a narcissist, nor do I think I’m self-absorbed, nor an attention seeker. Sometimes there isn’t someone around to take the photo, so why not do it yourself if it floats your boat? That said, if someone’s constantly shoving selfies in your face etc, then they perhaps have a problem; but for people like me who do keep themselves in check & don’t allow it all to go to their head, then I don’t see what the problem is. They’re not going to make me run to the nearest plastic surgeon either – I’m quite happy with how I look, flaws & all.
