David Jones Cover

I’m interested to know what people think about all the fuss over the cover of the latest David Jones catalogue cover. I find it hard to believe this is making news. Who cares if she is dark skinned and the fact that people can be so bothered by this they are complaining to DJ. If you don’t like it ,don’t look at it! Next they’ll be complaining about the occasional disabled kid in the Target catalogue. With all that is going on in the world today surely these people can find more important things to worry about.

I saw this photo and thought what a beautiful photo of a stunning woman with gorgeous skin. Can’t see why anyone would want to complain about this..

I don’t know what the actual complaint was, however I know it was along the lines of not being able to look like the model in the picture and the make up not being something she could wear.

I’ve never seen a cover model whose look I thought I could emulate. Not to mention that most fashion magazine or runway make up looks are so over the top that they are clearly not intended to be everyday looks—for anyone, no matter your skin colour, face shape, etc., etc., etc..

As everyone else has said, we live in a diverse society and our media should reflect that. The fact that this cover has caused such a stir means we are actually failing at this. If we were truly representing our diverse community in our media then we wouldn’t even be discussing this,—it would be a total non-issue.

I picked up a copy of the beauty book about a week ago and i honestly didn’t even give the fact that the model was black a second thought. Perhaps i was just more interested in what bargains i would find inside! I really think that making a big deal about the models skin colour is racist. It’s a beautiful cover shot and who cares about the colour of the models skin. Australia is multi-cultural so why not have a black cover model?

I just thought the model was beautiful when I saw the ad. It’s a shame some people just can’t accept we’re all different and that’s ok.

I didn’t even know there was a complaint about this ad! When I saw that beauty book cover, I didn’t think anything of it. Who cares about the colour of her skin or whatever? We live in a multi-cultural society, people just need to deal with it….or build a bridge. Next minute they’re going to start complaining about people like Paralympian Kelly Cartwright starring in the current Tradies ads & billboards….

I never heard of the complaint but have seen the ad and like everyone else just see a beautiful model with radiant skin and beaming smile. We live in a diverse society so there is no such thing as minority. The comment may not of intended to be racist but it certainly comes off that way. People need to be mindful what they write and DJ’s have realised they need to be mindful that their automated responses may not always be appropriate.

All I honestly saw when I saw the ad was gorgeous smile and I wish my skin looked that good! Pure and simple some envy and jealousy haha

The people making these complaints are small minded and intolerant of diversity. Can’t believe it made the news, but am so glad to see so much support for this gorgeous girl. What a stunner.

Seriously? I remember seeing the cover and thinking absolutely nothing……all I saw was a beautiful happy face. that made me smile. I didn’t even know anyone had complained about it or DJ’s response.

Some people are just never happy and have to gripe about any little thing. They just need a life.

I apologize if what i am going to say upsets anyone.

I agree that the woman who made the complaint is indeed racist.

However, i don’t think DJ’s reply is bad. Feeling sorry for somebody else’s uneasiness or unhappiness does not automatically mean an apology and acknowledging a mistake has been made. It is just a way of expressing empathy to the person.

It is just as bad that other people make a huge fuss out of a simple reply.

      Hi Jillian,

I don`t have an issue with how DJ`s response starts. The, “”we are sorry you feel this way ,”” line is fine as far as I`m concerned. But in my opinion it gets bad from there. They should have followed that sorry line with a clear distinction between the woman`s racists views and DJ`s own views. But by failing to make a distinction, DJ appears to be apologizing to the lady. Not only that, but DJ`s further adds to it by saying, “”we have passed your feedback onto our marketing dept for their information and consideration.”” To me the second line is an acknowledgement that the lady`s views has some legitimacy when it fact it shouldn`t.

The job for these employees who receive customer complaints is to solved it asap. They should only pass down concerns that are legit issues that they themselves cannot reasonably solve or that may help the business run better. That is how businesses usually work, the underlings take care of their responsibilities and only let legit issues trickle past them and onto their bosses or other departments.

The proper response from DJ should have been something along the lines of, “”we are sorry you feel this way,”” however, we at DJ are an equal opportunity employer and celebrate the beauty and diversity of our population and client base.

I would never feel sorry for anyone`s uneasiness or unhappiness brought upon that person by his/her own racist thought.
