Agree with both of you Frenchy1 and Seashells! Gwyneth Paltrow has some brow raising wacky recommendations.

I too use a lot of “clean beauty” & will admit to being sucked in by the whole paraben & talc-free stuff (and yes, sulphate-free too because from memory I’ve got issues with sulphates drying out my skin, I dunno), but some of the marketing & claims in the sphere are a bunch of hogwash & I try my best not to get too sucked in to it all as I know all too well that natural ingredients can also irritate skin etc. I also try my best to purchase cruelty-free products, but it can be a minefield once you start debating over whether a brand still qualifies as cruelty-free because their parent company isn’t blah blah blah.

(Side note: might be an unpopular opinion, but Gwyneth Paltrow makes me eyeroll & has been making me eyeroll with her diet & beauty opinions since the 90’s. That said, Sliding Doors is one of my fave films, so go figure.)

Now with that aside, here’s some of my fave brands that are, as far as I’m aware, “clean” & cruelty-free:

    • Eye of Horus – best for mascara, eyeliner and, to some extent, their lipsticks. Have used their Goddess Mascara on & off for years & still like it + their pencil & metallic liquid liners are great.

    • A Bit Hippy – discovered this brand this year, adore their Serene Skin Moisturiser. I only use it on my body (you can use it on the face, but it contains coconut oil as the 2nd ingredient & I know it makes people break out, so use with caution), but I love it as a staple body lotion because it’s thick but easily spreadable.

    • PUMP Haircare – used to be on BH. Dislike their hair masks (the 2 that I have tried both dried out the ends of my hair) & I didn’t like one of their conditioners for the same reason, but I dig their Hair Growth shampoo & their heat protectant. If you like nice-smelling hair products, then you’ll like this brand (their heat protectant smells good enough to eat).

    • Kester Black, Picture Polish, Zoya – great nail polish brands, particularly Kester Black (although KB are pricey & don’t have the biggest colour range).

    • Lanolips – my go-to for lip balm, always.

I`m with you SS, I think Gweny is full of it. I would purposely NOT buy anything she recommends. I`ve tried a Little Bit Hippy deodrant and insect repellent. Also a skin tint – wrong colour and pilled. So didn`t really work for me. I want to try Eye of Horus. I like Ecominerals Lippy and Winky Lux. I am using Eyeco mascara. Not sure if they are clean. Also went through a Perricone MD foundation/ concealer phase and also Tarte/Smash Box. Aspire to one day trying RMS and Hourglass. I get to try a lot of heavily discounted (usually discontinued) clean beauty from the Strawberry Net site. Just got a nice Au Naturale and Perricone Lip Tint, pretty much 80% off due to near expiry dates. I just use the heck out of them everyday until they expire then chuck out!

Covergirl have got their clean foundation, powder and mascara. They don’t contain a lot of nasty ingredients. I use some Mirenesse (not a BH brand) that make the same claims. It seems it differs a lot and is more about what brands leave out rather than what they put in. Like they may not use SLS but another chemical in the same family. Same with paraben and mineral oils. It can get tricky if you’re not a chemist!

By clean beauty do you mean natural ingredients? , not tested on bunnies? Your question has got me thinking and I’m guilty for not really reading the labels on most things I buy, or thinking about it.

I like Sheamoisture haircare and myaura deodorent. I use a lot of brands that are considered ‘natural’ , like A’kin , Grown Alchemist, kosmea and Glow Lab, so I just assume they are considered clean?

By Clean Beauty I mean beauty products that don`t have `nasties` such as parabens, talc, mineral oils, etc. and are cruelty free (yes with the bunny logo)

Even “”No Nasties”” is a nebulous term. There`s no agreed list of nasties, so brands are free to omit a couple & claim to be clean.

My priority is buying Australian-made whenever I can. I also like to buy environmentally friendly products.

They’ll also say “non-toxic” as though it’s legal to sell toxic products, which is simply not true. The formulators know that, but the marketing team want to make consumers think otherwise (or at least go with the current green/health/science washing trend).

There’s no set definition for it.

It’s 100% a marketing term and rooted in greenwashing and the anti-science movement (ala Goop etc) . It’s about as superfluous as putting a gluten free label on water.
