Are hunchbacks a thing now?

I was sitting in a cafe last week and I observed that every Adult that came in & lined up had a hunched back. Whereas the two children lined up with an Adult had perfectly straight backs.
Do you think that adults are lacking Calcium; have bad Posture or because we all lean over computers & mobile devices?
Or are we reverting back to previous human evolutionary posture?

Bad posture is not an attribute of adult population only. Look around and you will see it is ageless. Besides, lots of people have to deal with different spine issues and unfortunately it’s affecting the way they move, stand and so on. Never knew how many until I had to start to deal with my sciatica.

I had perfect ballerina posture as a child. Sadly when puberty hit, my chest grew too fast and too large for my small frame causing serious back pain and a hunch. For a while I couldn’t even sit up without back support. Surgeons did not want to operate on me (for a breast reduction) until I was into my early 20s as breast tissue keeps growing into your early 20s and it’s a very invasive surgery.

Sadly even after my reduction the damage is done and it’s taking a lot of physio, exercises and conscious practice to reverse the hunching that I simply had to do due to the weight pulling on my chest and shoulder muscles as a teenager.

I share this to encourage everyone who didn’t have issues like that to really invest into getting and keeping their posture good. I’d do anything to be able to have that ballerina posture back, but my back muscles are so damaged and stretched that it’s going to take years of work. I’d give anything to be able to just correct it on the spot.

Thank you for sharing NellAdams. It is a shame the Surgeons couldn`t do something earlier. I hope things improve for you.

Oh my poor posture. Yes sadly I am tending towards a hunched back too, but very aware of this. I also tend to lower my head down most times, again the computer, reading books, preparing meals, household chores all contribute to this slouchy look. But the biggest contribution for me was a very bad accident resulting in ruptured discs in both my neck and back and my physio at the time also stated I was tending towards the hunch back. I try to straighten up as much as possible, especially when sitting at the computer. Younger people don’t have the household chores at present but again, their time will come if they are not aware.

I find myself slouching a bit more, I think all the time we stare at screens and our mobile phones, our necks are also more slouched downwards I swear! Scary thought!

I really don’t like the term “hunchback”… It kind of has an ick feeling to it… I have a few spinal problems that in turn makes me look hunched over… These things can’t always be helped… Sometimes it is genetic… Sometimes it is caused by an accident… Sometimes it is cause by years of hard work… Whatever is going on for them, we shouldn’t judge…

Absolutely agree, my partner has a curved back and when I first started dating him I used to tell him to stand up straight but it is actually his spine and how his body is. Whether it be genetics or long term, it cannot be helped.

I think there is definitely an impact from mobile use, especially since it’s starting in very young children while their bones are still developing and they are growing.

Same with anyone working desk jobs, without doing counter movements/exercises are body will morph to suit whatever our most “usual” state is

Some people have genetic conditions that cause hunch back. Scoliosis runs very strongly on my Mum’s side of the family and some members are very badly affected. My older brother has it very severe and he is only 36. He will require surgery and a metal rod placed along his spine. He is very self conscious about it. Not everyone’s is related to bad posture and people may not feel great about having it, so best to be mindful that there are certain medical conditions that account for hunchbacks

My posture is bad too I constantly have to remind myself to straighten my shoulders.

By the way, that pic is misleading. We did not evolve from a monkey. So who knows what humans are reverting into! More than that bad posture, have seen something more disturbing….hive mind syndrome….is becoming stronger than in past. Independent thought, reflection, questioning…are becoming thing of just a few….very few.
