Sunscreen and Foundation

I was at a cosmetics counter the other day and the sales assistant told me I should be applying my sunscreen over foundation, not underneath! She also advised against sunscreen moisturisers due to the chemicals in them! Has anyone ever heard this before?

Interesting thread. I’ve always applied my moisteriser first, then sunscreen and finally my makeup. I just feel like if put sunscreen over my makeup, it will just ruin it and make it look all greasy?

This is all very interesting and helpful, so you should apply all skin care ect first, then sunscreen then foundation?

Friv ive never seen sunscreen powder, – do you mean a light foundation powder with SPF

Yes I would apply it in that order, but you would still need to reapply your sunscreen over the top if you are going to be outdoors and risk getting burnt 🙂

It still will always come down to the need to reapply every 2-4 hours if you are going to be outdoors anyway, so I guess in that situation you just have to keep going over, most spf cosmetics only provide minimal protection. I am not aware that SPF 50 is recognised here in Australia yet, the best protection here is SPF30+ and please correct me if I am wrong in saying the American SPF50 would only be equivalent to that of maybe SPF 15 or less here as their ratings go right up to SPF 100???

Mel, you are right that Australia only recognises SPF30+ (official statement from the Australian Cancer Council). The system in the US seems to be different. x

I use a primer with SPF 50 so it definitely goes under my makeup… I’ve never heard of putting it on top.

I’m not sure whether to apply sunscreen before or after your makeup but I use 2 sunscreens everyday. I use a liquid one before moisturiser and every couple of hours when the sunscreen has worn off I use a either a sunscreen powder or spray so it doesn’t mess up my makeup.

No I have never heard of that. I was reading a book lately after listening to Dr. Oz on the Oprah show and you can protect you skin significantly buy eating a tablespoon of tomato paste everyday. They ran tests and proved it worked on the show too. So this is probably a good alternative.

sunscreens hould be the last thing you apply, that is the last skincare item you apply before makeup

I think it depends. A chemical sunscreen (avobenzone, etc) will absorb the sun’s rays and should be applied on clean dry skin so BEFORE your moisturiser. A physical sunscreen (zinc oxide, etc) reflects the sun’s rays and should be applied over your moisturiser. A combined sunscreen should be applied before. A physical sunscreen is the better option for sensitive types.

Even the sunscreens with Zinc would go on first I believe, before makeup, I know that Invisible Zinc, the tinted version also has a powder makeup that you apply over the top of your IZ, but I guess it all comes down to what the sunscreen is. I mean what would be the point of putting sunscreen over the makeup, it would undo all of the foundation wouldn’t it??
